- A surprise visitor to the U.S.S. Discovery brings shocking news about Spock and dredges up past regrets for Burnham. Following the asteroid incident, Tilly struggles to keep a grip on her reality. L'Rell's authority on Qo'noS is threatened.
- Tilly continues to have hallucinations about May.
Amanda Grayson, Spock's mother and Burnham's adoptive mother, goes to Star base 5 to meet Spock. But the Star base 5 medical team refuses to share any details with Amanda about Spock. So, she steals his medical records and takes them to Discovery for decryption. Amanda knows about the seven signals from her briefing with Sarek.
Burnham and Amanda go to Pike and want his help to Decrypt the file. Pike calls the commander on Star base 5 and wants an update on his officer Spock. He also says that Spock has information on the seven signals that Pike has been ordered to investigate. Pike learns that Spock has escaped the psychiatric unit and is wanted for murdering three doctors. Amanda says that Spock would never murder anyone. Pike orders Burnham to Decrypt Spock's medical file.
Grayson recognizes a drawing in the records from Spock's childhood art: the Red Angel. Spock had been having visions of the Red Angel since childhood. Amanda narrates a story when Burnham was lost. Spock claimed that the Red Angel visited him and told him where Burnham was.
Meanwhile Tilly is still being haunted by the vision of May. May interacts with Tilly continuously throughout her day. This distracts Tilly from her work on the ship and is noticed by Saru and Pike. She knows that she is appearing as a mentally unstable person and quits the command training program. Tilly confides in Burnham that she started seeing a ghost after the dark matter from the asteroid hit her. She says that May's ghost is persistent and is grooming her for something but doesn't reveal what. Tilly is devastated as she will never make captain now. The ghost doesn't know what tears are (when it comments that Tilly's eye are dripping, when she cries). Based on the evidence, Burnham is sure that May is not a ghost or a delusion. She speculates that the dark matter only reacts to spores. Tilly needs to speak with Stamets.
Burnham admits to emotionally hurting Spock when they were young to protect him from Vulcan's logic extremists. Burnham has reached out several times since to make amends, but Spock was never interested.
On Qo'NoS, L'Rell (Mary Chieffo) proposes to make Tyler (Shazad Latif) the fleet commander as he was the chosen successor to T'Kuvma. Klingon house leader Kol-Sha (and the father of Kol) rallies the houses by saying that it is not a coincidence that the seven signals appeared so soon after L'Rell taking command of the empire. The signals are an omen. Tyler contacts Burnham and informs her about the threat to L'Rell's rule in Klingon Empire.
Tyler is shocked to know of the existence of his child with L'Rell from L'Rell's family, the house of Mo'Kai. L'Rell had kept the child hidden from Tyler as she considers the child as a vulnerability. But Tyler says that the child is the only person who helps Tyler integrate the personalities of Voq and Tyler within him and be at peace with the same.
Kol-Sha finds out about the child and kidnaps it. He threatens to kill Starfleet Officer Ash Tyler-formerly the Klingon Voq-and the Klingon Empire's leader L'Rell for having a secret child together. Kol-Sha will consider releasing the child only if L'Rell exiles from Qo'Nos and hands over control of the empire to Kol-Sha.
L'Rell and Tyler kill Kol-Sha with the help of Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), the Empress of the Mirror Universe's Terran Empire, who is now an agent of Starfleet's secretive Section 31. Georgiou tells L'Rell that in her quest for power, both Tyler and the baby are a liability.
In a ruse to consolidate power, L'Rell convinces the Klingon High Council that Tyler and the baby are dead. She says that Kol-Sha died defending her from Tyler, who was a traitor and betrayed her to the Federation. Tyler killed the baby.
Georgiou delivers the baby to a monastery and recruits Tyler to Section 31. Section 31 has an entity called CONTROL, who runs section 31.
May continues to hound Tilly and insists that Stamets is the captain of the ship and not Pike. Burnham and Engineer Paul Stamets use dark matter to remove a parasite from Tilly that caused her hallucination of May. Stamets says that the parasite spawned from a spore that attached to Tilly during their escape from the Terran Universe.
