Dark and harrowing

Warning: Spoilers
MARIONETTE is a darker-than-dark slice of social drama with a Korean high school setting. It explores sexual exploitation in the context of the Internet, as females fall victim to predatory groups of men who film their crimes and upload them for others to enjoy. Although the content isn't explicit, the subject matter is extremely adult in tone which makes this a harrowing watch. As with other Korean social dramas I've seen (such as NO TOMORROW), towards the climax the tone shifts more into thriller territory, with a satisfying denouement. The usual strong acting and quality production values make it a decent watch.

this is a propaganda movie

Absolutely idiotic behavior of actors, which could not happen in real life.

This is a propaganda movie aiming at protecting young girls from sexual abuse. Absolutely not worth watching.

Quite an interesting thriller...

I had the chance to sit down to watch the 2017 South Korean thriller "Marionette" here in 2021. Sure, I hadn't even heard about the movie prior to sitting down to watch it. But it being a South Korean movie, and one that I hadn't already seen, was more than sufficient to make me have an interest in sitting down to watch it.

And I must say that I really found writer and director Han-Wook Lee's 2017 movie to be a rather entertaining and enjoyable movie. It definitely had a very riveting and compelling story that grabbed me and took me along for a very well-told but also sort of disturbing storytelling.

"Marionette" is the type of movie that will not have a widely broad appeal I think, given the contents of the storyline and the topic that it deals with. But if you sit down to watch it, it is actually a rather good movie. And it revolves around some disturbing issues about abusive mentality and modern technology. Something that is very relatable to today's world and society, unfortunately.

The acting in the movie is good, and the actors and actresses do put on some very compelling and believable performances, which definitely helps to bring the movie to life in a very realistic manner. And the movie had some very detailed characters that you easily associate and relate to, and this definitely made the movie all the more enjoyable.

I thoroughly enjoyed Han-Wook Lee's "Marionette" and it was quite a surprise of a movie as it turned out to be this interesting. My rating of this 2017 thriller lands on a well-deserved seven out of ten stars. It is definitely well-worth the time to sit down and watch.

Good in theory, bad in execution

Warning: Spoilers
Weak weak and furthermore Weak, and you can start with the typical chief Duo Female Protagonists making stupid decisions, followed by more stupid decisions.

Now granted one would expect the adolescent of the two females would make the mistake of trusting the boy she met online. But after being drugged and than later gang raped, she had a multitude of options to address her situation. But naw, walking home from her mother snack shop she runs into her rapist and doesn't run away, create a scene or at least find help. Nope she gets on her knees and allows herself to be conveniently surrounded, coerced into drinking some sort of drug all while in the open with no witnesses.

Well I find it suspect that he would know her route home, much less the rest of the crew. So I found this extremely weak and unbelievable insert into the flow of things.

Now for the teacher, first red flag was the note on the coffee cup, yet she drank it anyway. Okay I'll try to let that pass while we come to the following day and the fact that she never made it home, the abrasions on her wrist and the creepy student hovering over her.

Now she suspects something and the text messages with the photo evidence was more than enough to get the Po Po involved. I mean she was thoughtful enough to request the conveniently unavailable security tapes "How did the student know about this outage?" yet no follow up with the authorities. She receives further texts, yet instead of talking with her fiance, or again the police, she converses with her tormentor.

A little over 21 minutes into this movie and I am already disappointed with the weakness of the plot, the glaring holes in it and how stupid the writers have scripted these two female Protagonist.
