This episode is presented as a documentary that focuses on what happened with DJ Slizzard, whom we know as Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, the man who kept Kimmy and the Mole Girls kept in an underground bunker. Granted, it feels bad to have an episode without Kimmy, Titus, and the gang but the episode does expand and adds more depth to the events of previous seasons while also setting up new events that will later be explained. But overall, it's still fun, if you give it a chance, and the show runners present it as an actual documentary, adding a unique style. John Hamm was once again fantastic as The Reverend, adding a more realistic touch to his performance.

Warning: Spoilers
We may be long past the days of parody films like Scary Movie, but this was a really strong episode of the show. This is the one we'll remember from Season 4.
A well-done look at the show's main villain told through the eyes of a well-written "bro" character, something most people think is easy to do, but few programs do well.
Funny, entertaining, fresh,a great episode.

If you like those crime documentaries like Making a Murder and the podcast Serial, this episode will be so much better for you (and it's already a strong episode to begin with). It's plays on all the characteristics of that genre, and you also get so fun moments like archival footage of Hamm himself! It's an abnormally formatted episode, but I think it works really well!
Best episode of the series.

Critical darling but a waste of an episode

This is the final season of this show and they decided to spend an episode on a character that wore out his welcome in the first season.
This might be an unpopular view, but in my opinion the first series tanked right at the end as it strayed from the funny and dwelled in the serious. I've no problem with the show addressing the dark aspects of Kimmy's confinement, but the courtroom drama left the laughs thin on the ground.
Well in this episode they're pretty non-existent. I smirked a few times, but that's about it. The entire episode is devoted to a exploration of the back story of Kimmy's captor, through the lens of an entirely new character. It's quite competent and well made as a spoof of a documentary show, but it's so lacking in laughs it really fails to justify itself.
This is the *final season*, and there are only a few episodes left. This episode is simply a waste of valuable time that could have been spent on the characters we know and love, instead of crafting a "worthy" episode for the critics to fawn over.

Sarcastically silly episode

I do like this episode, a lot, my favorite of all episodes. Simply because it's a reflection of the real world, connects the metoo events with this, and indicated how ridiculous it would be for people who hasn't realized the necessity of this event, and also those who are too obsessed with it. It's a really good one, love it. The documentary DJ fingersomething was brilliant

I thought it was a nice episode to switch up the usual vibe of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitd. I found it very entertaining because I think they did a great job making it feel like an actual documentary, or, a parody of one. The calls in the middle of the night, the looking at the cameramen, the narration. I wish they experimented a bit more with the episodes.
PEAK UKS

I had so much fun!!!! It was like watching a +35 min skit of SNL. Loved every second of it. I watched Mad Men in the middle of UKS and oh boy I just love that John Hamm is supporting this series! Tina Fey really puts his heart and essence into this one. Bobby Moynihan reopening cases for Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein was hilarious.
Also we get to see Kimmy actually swear.
SUCH A GOOD SATIRE of how ridiculous Netflix can be sometimes and scripted America reopening cases of serial killers hahaha. Titus playing every possible character was such a delight? Oh we watching this again for sure. Uuuuunbreakable.

American Vandal as presented by Tina Fey

After a couple of so-so seasons, we've finally got something pretty great. More episodes of this show should have been like this and less like 'boomers not understanding technology.'
It's essentially a condensed 30 minute American Vandal/Making A Murderer documentary done with characters from the show and there's lots of callbacks and generally well crafted jokes to enjoy throughout the episode. While this is primarily a Kimmy-less episode, focusing more towards The Reverend and the dumb DJ who follows him, there's enough here to make it worth a watch.
It's only 30 minutes. You're watching freakin Kimmy Schmidt. It's not like you have anywhere you need to be.

Please fire the writers who did this one!

I enjoy this show and the acting is normally great, how can you go wrong with Carol Kane and Jane Krakowski :-) just fantastic, but this episode is one of the worst written I've ever seen... of any show!
Were the regular writers on holiday and some work experience people were brought in? I would have preferred the random musical episode that seems to happen across shows when the writers are light on for ideas.
The acting is appalling as well, but to be fair you can only work with what you are given and that wasn't very much. Please never do this again. To those watching, skip this one entirely, you wont miss anything!

If you thought you were going to see Kimmy Schmidt, don't waste your time. I have no idea why anyone approved this episode. It was atrocious. Nothing to do with Kimmy. If they were thinking spin-off show, they put their efforts in the wrong place. Not even a cult follower would like this.
You Have GOT To Be Kidding

Evidently, this is but one episode of a series. Netflix, in their infinite wisdom chose this to represent the quality of the show. I am thinking someone kidnapped an executive of the company, refusing to release him until this episode was offered on NF. This has to be one of the dumbest, unfunny comedies ever put on film. I have wracked my brain to think of something positive to say...all I can come up with is the show only lasts 33 minutes (but seems like an eternity).
When I think Netflix cannot come up with anything worse than they usually do, along comes this garbage. It is no wonder that Netflix removed member's reviews from their site. After suffering through this, I totally understand why.
Watch it if you must, the plus is you will then appreciate every other 'mocumentry' as a classic. Scratching your butt will be more entertaining than watching 'Scratching the Surface'.

Most of season 4 of the show is a bit rough. Unfunny politics + relying on pop culture references & cliches to carry the entire show and almost all dialogue. This episode in particular is 100% skippable. Almost as if the writers had a competition to write the worst, most groan worthy 30 some minutes of filler they could.
What the ever loving hell...??

Exceptionally bad episode
cyndi_fan24722 June 2020
This is one of the only episodes in this that stands out as being weak, and more than that, this one was actually grating. I think due to the fact that they create a pseudo documentary (which plays as the episode) it sort of rips you out of the Kimmy Schmidt universe somewhat.
That said, I wouldn't skip the episode if you are committed to the series, because there are some references to it in later episodes which are much funnier than this episode itself. There are a couple of gags that still made me laugh. But pretty disappointing for such a great series.

Since the beginning I didn't like this tv show. However I kept on watching only because I liked Jaqueline. But after this episode (it took me a while, I know) I decided to stop. That's really too much nonsense. Nonsense episode of the stupidest tv show. What a waste of time, I could learn how to prepare sushi instead.
