The title Sylphvania Grove is a portmanteau and is technically redundant, "sylvania" means forest land while "grove" means a small woods. The added "PH" refers to Sylphs, a spirit of the air from the same family as Wisp (the spirit in the movie). "Vania" can also be interpreted as a hidden meaning, as Mycena's trip to the forest can be seen as nature's gift, allowing her to face her fears.
Sylphvania Grove crowdfunded successfully in April 2017. It's reached it's goal in just a few days and doubled it by the end of the campaign.
The main character's name, Mycena, comes from a type of mushroom. The director [Rebekah Fieschi] says "The word mycena is actually a type of mushroom, I really love the way it sounds and I like the idea that the name of this 10-year-old character battling not to fit in a mold came from something that has a tendency to grow too fast and is considered unpleasant."
