- A teenager cares for her younger sibling and multi-ethnic local orphans in the face of danger after her Grandmother is killed surrendering to the Mexican Army toward the end of the Texas Revolution.
- Near the end of the Texas Revolution in April 1836, a skirmish between colonists and the Mexican Army is underway near the homestead of Grammy, a Tennessee native whose family endured a difficult journey to start a new life in Texas. Fearing for the safety of the children in her care, she rushes back to a spot on her property where her granddaughter, Lillian, is playing with her little brother and several other children orphaned during the war. Grammy's been keeping an eye on the advancement of Santa Anna's troops, and she instructs the children it's time to hide. Before leading the younger children and her brother's dog, Ranger, to a safe place, Lillian is given a musket by Grammy and encouraged to protect both the young lives and Merryland, the farm she considers the family legacy. Although reluctant to leave her grandmother's side, Lillian guides the group to a hiding place among the trees near her grandmother's house where they watch in horror as Grammy gets shot by troops in the midst of surrendering. After the troops leave, Lillian runs to comfort her grandmother in the old woman's dying moments and promises to protect the family farm. After burying Grammy, Lillian leads the children through the countryside away from the Mexican Army with only enough provisions for a few days. While making camp, they're startled by an encounter with a runaway slave, Jesse, who says she's on her way to see her new granddaughter. Jesse informs the children the revolution ended after Texas won a battle at San Jacinto just days ago. Her news pleases the children, and they invite Jesse to return to the farm with them. The children and Jesse make camp again on the way back to Merryland Farm, and Lillian grabs her musket and joins Greycloud, who's armed with a bow and arrows, to hunt for their next meal. While the remaining children are reciting bible verses, a pair of lawless men, Gus and Rooster, come upon the group. Hungry and desperate, the duo see an opportunity to profit from seizing two of the girls they assume are runaway slaves and returning them to their master. The men quickly move from making verbal threats to getting physical, as Rooster snatches one of the girls. When Ranger's constant barking prompts Gus to shoot him, the sound of gunfire alerts Lillian and Greycloud to turn back. With the lives of the children and their new friend Jesse at risk, Lillian must find a way to protect them all, get them back to Merryland Farm, and keep her promise to Grammy.
