the freshness

It is the lead virtue of this beautiful short film. I can not explain . But I admire. The delicacy, the grace, the impecable story, the great nuances, the dialogue, the slices of silence, the force of gestures and the entire geography, a sentimental and small and fundamental one, gived by the film. Yes, it is a romantic film but after its end, the hopefull final define it as more.

The natural awkwardness at first carries it when it leans in a bit heavily later on

This short opens with a couple of a first date - one is British born, the other from a small town in Afghanistan. I'm not sure if we are meant to know, assume, or wonder, if this is an arranged marriage meeting, but this is what the date is. At first though it is as nicely natural and awkward as must such interactions. Both people eager to engage and connect, and maybe trying too hard to push it. It continues like this for the first third and it is this groundwork that makes it a better film than it may have otherwise been. I say this because the middle section changes the tone to be a little more serious and focused on making a point.

It leans into this section a bit too much, with the dialogue becoming a bit too on-the-nose, and the natural feel to the interaction going out the window. Being 'with' the characters at this point helps it though, as I was engaged with this date and this was important in making it work. It is a shame that it didn't have more finesse in those latter scenes, but it still works for what it is even if it felt in need of a bit of polish in the production, writing, and delivery on the film as a whole.
