Originally filmed in 1996-98.
The scene inside the Grand Union near the end of the film was shot without permission. The actors met at aisle 7 and shot it as quickly as possible. No one from management even noticed. The store was closed for business a number of years later and demolished.
Carrie Audino actually worked as a waitress at the restaurant where she played a waitress in this movie. She was also an actress! The scene was filmed in 1998 at Poppolini's Italian restaurant on Waverly Place near NYU, Greenwich Village, New York. The restaurant is no longer there.
This 1998 filmed (and 2014 broadcast) feature film is actually based on a 1986 short film created by Joe Malone (and some members of the cast) as a school assignment short film project during the director's tenure at New York University. They got a B + for the assignment....and to be honest-o a standing ovation from the audience during the film's premiere.
The Man took a rather long time to complete. The initial shooting was in 1995, the bulk of the shooting was in 1996, and the final edit wasn't completed until 1998.
