Warning: Spoilers
I have listened to many of the successful singer's songs, but I knew there were more I had either forgotten about or not listened to at all, so this documentary countdown programme was a good opportunity to see what else he did. Sir Elton John is one of the most recognised vocal and songwriters in music history, alongside his long-time songwriter Bernie Taupin, he has created some of the greatest and most recognised songs in history. Elton had celebrated his 70th birthday by the year this programme was broadcast, his legendary career continues, and this show counted down the best songs he has given us, as voted for by the public. The songs listed are: "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" (1975), "Philadelphia Freedom" (1975), "Saturday Night's Alright (for Fighting)" (1973), "Nikita" (1985), "Are You Ready for Love" (1979), "Bennie and the Jets" (1976), "Sacrifice" (1990), "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" (1976), "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (1973), "Daniel" (1973), "Crocodile Rock" (1972), "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" (1983), "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" (1974) – including the 1991 duet with George Michael, "Tiny Dancer" (1972) - used in a memorable scene in Almost Famous, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" (1976) - his duet with Kiki Dee, "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (1994) - Oscar winning song, co-written by Tim Rice, from The Lion King, "I'm Still Standing" (1983), "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)" (1972) - covers by Kate Bush and William Shatner are mentioned, "Candle in the Wind" (1974) and (1997), and a suitable number one with "Your Song" (1970). Other songs mentioned and played in the programme were: "Kiss the Bride", "Sixty Years On", "Sad Songs (Say So Much)", "Pinball Wizard" - featured in the film Tommy, "Made in England" and "The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909–34)". Songs not mentioned that I love were: "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" (my personal favourite), "Step Into Christmas", "The Bitch Is Back" and "Electricity" - from Billy Elliot The Musical. Elton is interviewed by David Walliams, who also narrates, and there are contributions from James Bay, Ashley Beedle (remixed "Are You Ready for Love" and reached number one), James Blunt, Paul Buckmaster, Boy George, James Corden, Cameron Crowe, Kiki Dee, Taron Egerton, Brandon Flowers, Stephen Fry, Paul Gambaccini, Roger Greenaway (songwriter), Neil Patrick Harris, Billy Joel, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Davey Johnstone (guitarist), Quincy Jones, Jon Bon Jovi, Billie Jean King, Tony King (former record promoter), Annie Lennox, Rob Lowe, Lulu, Chris Martin, Shawn Mendes, Nina Myskow, Nanette Newman (wife of Bryan Forbes), Nigel Olsson (drummer), Sharon Osbourne, Rag'n'Bone Man, Lionel Richie, Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes, Nile Rodgers, Jake Shears, Ed Sheeran, Bastille's Dan Smith, Sir Rod Stewart, Sting, Janet Street-Porter, Bernie Taupin, Johnnie Walker (former Radio 1 DJ) and Dionne Warwick. Very good!
