This film marks the longest gap between Despicable Me films. The gap between Despicable Me (2010) & Despicable Me 2 (2013) was 3 years, the gap between Despicable Me 2 & Despicable Me 3 (2017) was 4 years and the gap between Despicable Me 3 & Despicable Me 4 (2024) is 7 years.

The sixth theatrically released fourth installment to an animated film franchise (not counting spinoffs), after Shrek Forever After (2010), Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), Toy Story 4 (2019), Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania (2022) and Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024), all but one of which were also the first quadriquels done by their respective animation studios.
The film is releasing on the 11th anniversary of Despicable Me 2 (2013).
