Ethnic Moroccan schoolboy Moussa, who dreams of becoming a train driver, warmly welcomes his new neighbor girl Rosie, who moves into the modest social residence of Brussels poor quarter Molenbeek. They meet as he retrieves his wandering cat, which he passes as a dog to his family, who all share a single apartment the floor above Rosie and her 'single' mother. From uncle Joris, Rosie learns her father isn't missing presumed dead, but in jail as member of a car thieves gang. Moussa offers to accompany her visiting, but isn't allowed by prison staff. Later he's released, but Rosie's mother refuses to consider a reconciliation. The kids of different backgrounds help each-other deal with facts and dreams. Meanwhile racist janitor Tak seeks excuses to expel Moussa's family, but the neighbors like them enough to cover even when opportunity arises.
