PAPERS PLEASE: A fine adaptation of an indie classic
acjd_shmacjd9 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As a fan of the original game, I put off watching this film for the longest time, due mainly to the fact that I wasn't sure how well this concept could be executed in such a way. I figured most of the game's draw came from actually being involved in the inspections, and while I still think this is true to some small degree, the film does a good job at bringing this video game world into a more cinematic experience.

To begin, PAPERS PLEASE: THE SHORT FILM has many virtues that elevate it to its heights. Igor Savochkin gives a very good performance in the role of the protagonist, riding that fine line between being blank enough for the viewer to insert themselves into his position, while still remaining his own intriguing and believable character with goals, motivations, thoughts, feelings, and humanity. His portrayal was occasionally not involved enough (the ending being the biggest example of this), but most of his work in this film was very very good. Other actors, in Tokarev, Tsygankova, Panyukov, and Kravtsova, all give short of great but good performances in their respective roles as well.

The film looks pretty good as well, using bright and noticeable colours as thematic emblems for emotions and countries, as well as utilizing a higher-quality camera than that of typical shorts, for satisfyingly crisp video. The plot of the film is simple, but undeniably well-made, intriguing, and believable; seeing the progression from the Inspector being rigidly devoted to his job, followed by his shame and regret, followed then by his apologetic and forgiving relaxation of the rules, to his downfall caused by his one and only exception. It plays well into the important themes of the film while also being an awesomely haunting conclusion.

If I had to come up with any legitimate criticisms of PAPERS PLEASE: THE SHORT FILM, it would be the multiple montages of the Inspector granting and denying access to Arstotzka. While the orchestral cover of the game's main motif as well as countless easter eggs that fans of the original will surely recognize are both welcome additions, they contrasted too heavily with the real meat of the film, really just ending up as cheesy, obviously padded time. This is not too much of a problem however, given the film's mere 10-minute runtime.

Overall, a successful adaptation of one of the best indie video games of all time. I'm very glad I checked it out and I'm impressed with how well it managed to translate aspects of Arstotzka from game to film, being able to balance being a rewarding experience for longtime fans while remaining an accessible one for those unfamiliar with the source material.

A great adaptation
GreenOrMikeTyson3 April 2024
Well, this is another very short one i have to write a paragraph on, however this adaptation adapts the game extremely well, Papers, Please, is one of my favorite games ever, and this film is one of my favorite films of all time, it's truly a great experience, it's just as dark and gloomy as the real game, although if you have never played the game, I cant see myself recommending this to you, as the game, or a basic understanding of the game, is quite necessary to enjoy this film, although it's still a great incredible movie, if you know the game, please watch it! You really won't be disappointed!

A Great Short Film for a Great Game.
Kyle-Violett30 April 2024
For this being a free film on Steam, it really is a great short film. They put effort into what they were making, and it shows. The translation from game to film is really smooth.

I've had this short film in my Steam library for months, knowing that I would've watched it someday, and I am sad that I didn't watch it sooner. The locations were simple but fit what I imagined when playing the game, and the actors were the same way; they fit the world perfectly and were talented actors.

Bravo to the team behind this, and I hope they were able to make more. There is talent on the team, and someone must still be using it, right?

The Most Accurate Video Game Movie
sitesurfer3 March 2018
This is simply the most accurately portrayed video game movie I have ever seen. I feel that this movie captures the feel of the game and touches on the subjects in the game better than any other. Although short, this film is an interesting watch whether you've played the game or not. I highly recommend giving it a watch. It's both short and free, so why not?

Probably best film, based on video game
thzavitok25 February 2018
10 minutes was enough for the film to convey the atmosphere of the game of the same name, to intrigue the audience, to shock him and give hope for the revival of Russian cinema.

Viewable in steam and youtube.

Some may call it a 'masterpiece' and for a good reason!
onegamesmaster25 February 2018
I just watched this twice, for free, on Steam. In 9 minutes this made me feel more than a 2 hour long movie from Hollywood. It really shines in every aspect ranging from acting to presentation of the dystopian world.

It is a must watch for any movie lover. Can't say more than that. Go watch it and if you really like it, buy the game. I bet that in the near future we will get a full motion picture because of this little masterpiece. Totally recommended!

Unbelievable film
npip-6131412 December 2019
The production quality is truly incredible, definitely at the level of a Hollywood hit if not better. The set fully enveloped the atmosphere of the game, each piece had detail and depth. The actors were perfect, the lead actor for the Inspector had an amazing performance, probably the best I've seen in a long time in how he represented his sternness, his emotion, the way he thought throw allowing the last passport, everything. I think the way he grabbed his head at 8:39 was a bit unnatural, but that was a mere 1 second. His performance after Elisa chocked me up. The clothing was so well done, looked just scruffy enough, had the soviet Russian vibe, everything. A true piece of art.

Faithful and well executed.

Excellent writing, set design, and art direction, managed to capture the style of Papers, Please while still being realistic, the acting was great, and I thought the lack of music in the more emotional/tense scenes worked really well and felt very human and captivating. I really liked the music although it doesn't fit that well with the setting it goes for, editing was good but could've been better towards the end, and it used quite a bit of CGI, which put me off but at the same time it still kind of works and is forgivable for the most part.

Fantastic!
simolaf-7914525 July 2020
Strong at the beginning, strong in the middle, weak at the end. Marvellous insiders with known persons from the game and heartbreaking scenes but it was very rushed at the end. There was room for a few more minutes. But this takes nothing away and it was just a great experience and a great film!

Something really memorable is missing
Horst_In_Translation18 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"Papers, Please: The Short Film" is a Russian Russian-language film released earlier this year (2018) that became an instant hit on Youtube and attracted millions of viewers, probably also because all the subtitles provided. It runs for 11 minutes only and that already includes the closing credits. Writer and director is Nikita Ordynskiy and the plot can be summarized quickly. First we have all kinds of people asking for permits to stay for a little while and we see the official in charge of accepting pr rejecting these permits. Then eventually, there is a big blast at the ending, a major plot twist. I thought the first part was a bit too long for its own good while the final part had a tocuh of "for the sake of it" to it. Maybe you need to hae played the game this is based on in order to enjoy the movie, but I think it should never be required to have seen or checked out something else, be it a prequel, a game or whatever, in order to appreciate a film. This one here could have worked better as part of a full feature film perhaps as the acting and other production values aren't too bad, but as a standalone film I cannot recommend it unfortunately as something is missing in terms of plot and story-telling and it was a negative deal-breaker. Watch something else instead.

about us

Warning: Spoilers
I do not know the game. but that is not a real problem. because the film gives ways to memories. about borders between Germany of Cold War. about Corea. about dictorships.about sacrifices, from Sarajevo of 1914 or Prague of 1943, to Palestine and Western Europe of our time. to about broken destinies, families, countries. and that is the motif for who, after its final scene, the silence is the only reasonable reaction. because it is simple - it is maybe not a masterpiece but a honest, powerfull for its honesty, portrait of near history. about essence of power. about the source of fear. about law and the functionary as victim of rules. a film who impress. in profound sense. for long time. because it is a remember. about people, past and future. because the autoritarian temptation works always, in impecable manner. because Arsztotzka is more than a place. it is a teritory from our common memory. so, usefull. brilliant. and great.
