I once worked in a building where the Social Services Department was on the above floor. They always had vacancies of some kind, proof that even 20 years ago they had trouble recruiting or keeping staff. Despite a show of support from all those children she helped in the past, Miriam resigns knowing she is in for the chop by her bosses who capitulate in the face of a hostile media and central government.

As for the Warners, they were not the perfect middle class couple the show made them out to be in the first episode. Alice Warner lies to the police knowing they will re-arrest Nate. After all a black man with his record has little chance against the word of someone like Alice.

The final episode does reveal the truth as to how Kiri died and who did it, although I was not wholly convinced by the explanation given.

Some viewers might be upset that the series finished with some story strands still up in the air. Writer Jack Thorne should be applauded for trying to examine complex issues of child welfare and race even though it was packaged up in a murder mystery.
