The opening segment backtracks eighteen months to introduce us to La Mano Cartel, which is run by the enterprising Gabriel from Rosarita. From an inventive family-owned business starting with little "Alo" toy birds, La Mano has evolved into a giant conglomerate that controls the L.A. ports for drug trafficking. Gabriel likes to conceal contraband (i.e., drugs) in the Alos. The long arm of "The Hand" is also includes parts that may be severed at any time for those standing in the way of Gabriel.
In this episode there are some great shots of rural California, as well as the San Fernando Valley, a picturesque reservoir, trains, and bridges of L.A.
Tom Wyatt, or "Mr. Tom," is Gabriel's whipping boy. Tom is given his marching orders to make the Julio case go away, otherwise Gabriel may potentially be exposed. You never want to interrupt Gabriel when he is speaking. He is the "surgeon" we have glimpsed in previous episodes. His philosophy is that of "contrapposto," which is Dante's theory of punishment appropriate to the crime in "The Inferno."
Brittany appears on the cusp of messing up again and she begins a relationship with "Mr. Tom" Wyatt, who attended one of her rehab meetings.
The severed head of Tito Garcia is sent to Billy, who takes it to the police station and hands it to Detective Keith Roman. Billy lands in jail until the kind FBI agent Jeff Clayton extracts him along with Patty. It is Patty who recognizes that Billy, his daughter, and his associates are now in so deep that their lives are in jeopardy. On top of everything, Judge Wallace has ruled that the gun and the video footage may be entered into evidence.
In the best scene in the program, Billy has an extended conversation with Marisol after her birthday candlelight dinner in the bar that was reserved exclusively for them for the evening. Billy realizes that Marisol is withholding something from him, but does not yet know the depth of her betrayal. She too is unaware of the consequences of her actions and that she is in over her head. Marisol even approaches Denise to try to find out more about what Billy knows from the FBI. Marisol is playing both Billy and the daughter and becoming more completely in over her head.
Danny Loomis visits the home of Roman and his wife, recognizing that his frazzled partner is about to crack. Indeed, information uncovered by J.T. from his contacts reveals that Roman was using Tito as a C.I. (confidential informant). When Billy learns this new detail, he pays a surprise visit to the home of Roman, where he informs him that with the death of Tito, Roman is now low man on the totem pole and must give states evidence to save his hide.
