Thrilling, but slow paced...
vedanthpbharadwaj13 April 2019
The performances of all the actors were mind boggling. The story, at the beginning puts you at the edge of your seat and as time goes on, it becomes boring. They definitely could have reduced the lag, which was sort of unwanted. The climax was brilliant, but at by that time, people would lose their patience and not follow it properly. Therefore, I'm going to give a 7 star.

Treat to Watch Kavaludari
surajbj-1668419 April 2019
Kavaludari - Hemanth from "Godibanna Sadharna Mykattu" fame has come with his new movie. Incidentally it is a PRK productions debut movie. Trailor was promising. So expectations were high. A traffic inspector (Rishi) trying to get into crime branch. But not getting the right opportunity. While digging for metro work three skeletons were found. This was under Rishi traffic controlling area and decides to trace the criminal out of self interest. He meets a small newspaper owner Achyuth, who is also in search of story. This leads Rishi to 1977 emergency era case file. He wants to meet investigation officer of the case (Ananthanag) who has few clues but case closed unresolved. How did Rishi found Anananthnag, did he help him on case? What was Achyuth intreset in this case? If you need answer for all these question visit your nearest cinema's.

Hemanth has narrated tale in interesting and unique way. Each frame appears as if its happening in front of you. Ofcourse its bit slow in second half but keeps you engaged with twists. The case file reading episode is Awesome. This has been ably supported by cinematographer AdvaithGurumurthy. He has played with light and dark beautifully. It will be a benchmark on cinematography. Charan Raj background score keeps the mood of the movie. Ashwini-Puneeth Rajkumar should be appreciated for producing this project. Good beginning for PRK production. Achyuth has done fabulous job. Ananthanag is brilliant and superb. But Man of the Movie goes to Rishi. He has taken big stride from "Operation Alumelamma" and done fantabulous job. Siddharth Madhyamik in retro look done good job. Sampath as mylore Srinivas done well. Roshani has less job to do. Sumana Ranganath fires up screen with short span of presence.

Its not a commercial entertainer. Artistic crime, suspense and thriller movie. Definitely a new age movie. There is a subtle messages. Watchout for Fly in 2 scenes. Hemanth story telling is enough to watch this movie. But icing on cake is brilliant and apt acting by all actors. For Ananthanag and Achyuth fans treat to watch. Must watch in theatre. 4/5 #kavaludari

Did Agatha Christi know kannada?
rohitrookihit15 May 2019
The movie is a little slow to start with, but once it picks pace it just races through. The twists and plots are nothing short of a top notch Hollywood crime thriller. One of the best kananda crime thrillers I would say.

dragoonks200618 May 2019
The movie has a brilliant story which is fast paced. The audience will be gripping on to the edge of their seat through the whole movie. Marvelous casting with each cast member giving 200%. The screenplay is fluid and flawless. Deserves a second watch. Definitely a new benchmark setter.

A slow paced, intriguing crime thriller with some standout performances!
ConfusedRoulette12 April 2019
This film's trailer and songs had set great expectations from the director Hemanth Rao especially after his exceptional directorial debut "Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu" back in 2016. However the expectations don't seem to have lived up to that extent in this movie. The story begins when Shyam (Rishi of Operation Alamelamma fame), a traffic policeman who is bored of his work and wants to move to the crime branch, gets fascinated when the skeletal remains of a family related to an old murder case are found at a metro construction site. He secretly follows up the case and begins his hunt for the murderer and the links related to it. This leads him to retired police inspector Mutthanna (Anant Nag) who was originally in-charge of the case and who now lives a life of solitude, drinking all day long. Once Shyam gains Mutthanna's trust, they both team up and continue the hunt. There are many other characters who appear in between and the movie throws up some intriguing twists and turns. The pace of the movie is slow right from the beginning until the end and the film gets gripping only in the last 30 minutes. Also the length of the movie must have been shorter. Except for these two things, the film has its own bewildering & intriguing moments and is otherwise a good watch and won't disappoint you. The acting is also realistic with the star cast having performed brilliantly especially Rishi, Anant Nag and Achyuth Kumar who are the standout performers. Paired with this is the excellent cinematography by Advaitha Gurumurthy and some mind boggling mysterious music (mainly the song Nigooda) by Charan Raj. Overall you can watch this movie if you have the patience to sit through a slow paced thriller or if you are a psychological crime thriller movie enthusiast.

Edge-of-the-seat thrill ride.
Anurag-Shetty12 April 2019
Kavaludaari tells the story of traffic inspector, K.S. Shyam(Rishi). Shyam finds some evidence connected to an old unresolved case. He takes the help of retired inspector Muthanna(Anant Nag), to crack the mystery surrounding this case.

Kavaludaari is a mind-blowing movie. Writer-director Hemanth M. Rao has knocked it out of the park yet again, after Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu(2016). This film is a classic whodunit & keeps you guessing, right till the end. The background score by Charan Raj is sensational. The performances are the highlight of the movie. Rishi is spectacular as K.S. Shyam. From his happy-go-lucky character in Operation Alamelamma(2017), to the conflicted character he's playing in Kavaludaari, Rishi's acting prowess knows no bounds. Anant Nag is outstanding as usual, as Muthanna. Achyuth Kumar is amazing as Kumar. Roshni Prakash & Suman Ranganathan are good, in their respective performances. Samanvita Shetty is sensational as Mrs. Naidu. Sidhartha Maadhyamika is awesome as Mr. Naidu. The supporting cast is brilliant. Kavaludaari is a must watch. Go check it out even if you don't understand Kannada, as there are English subtitles. Sandalwood's best thriller. Watch it as soon as possible, guys!

Tell, Tell, but no Tale
OnjiMooteDaMarle30 April 2019
What happens when someone offers you a 2 days old biriyani when you have been fed starch rice all your life? You love the biriyani so much that you give 10/10 rating. This is the case with the Kannada film industry. All the super stars are busy acting in remakes and originals where they are always portrayed as gods. When such things happen, a little off track feels like some fresh air.

The film has really good cinematography and above average music (Loved the 'Ee sanjege aa bananu..' by the same music director Charan). The opening credit music was really good and so were all the songs but there is a similarity in Charan's music and I don't find him going out into any uncomfortable zones. It's good, but it's very similar and very heard of.

The acting is very average. Rishi is just Rishi. I watched this film for him and Hemanth Rao (who co-wrote a much appreciated 'Andhadhun').

The story is very known. I couldn't find anything valuable in the story to feel it any different from films I see. Yes, the direction is good. But not the story. The first half is very bland. So is the second half except for one major twist. Then another final twist - The final twist which should have made me go 'Oh wow' or for that matter any reaction, I couldn't give one because that twist was completely unnecessary for a writer like Hemanth (others can try that, Hemanth shouldn't have). A very average story. The screenplay was above average though and would have been good if it weren't for the unnecessary songs. It's a thriller cum suspense drama. Please keep it that way.

When there is a movie based on more dialogues than actions, the dialogues need to be crisp and real, not creative or filmy or literature-ish. I personally felt there was a lot of talking. As the film reached it's climax, I felt the characteristics of the character played by Rishi had changed suddenly. There was no escalation to reach the final scenes in terms of his characteristics to such an extent. Unfortunately Roshni Prakash is like every female 'lead' in any Kannada film. She is just made to be there. All she had to do was be teary eyed,at all times, could have given her a little more to act - it looked like she could do more.

I don't watch Kannada films of super stars because they are all the same. The last Kannada film I watched was 'Rajaratha' (which was horrible by the way) because Bhandary's first was quite OK. If such films also tame me with similar stories, am scared of not knowing Kannada films at all.

For some reason, while reaching the climax of the film, I remembered Shankar Nag's 'Accident'.

Honest attempt...but not quite there
sajjanr25 January 2021
This is a decent move and a very honest attempt at creating a good old fashioned cinema. However the plot is only interesting at the beginning but does not hold till the final reveal. The movie could have been a bit more crisp with sharper screenplay. Some of the parts are predictable and seem like 70s style presentation, especially Ananth nag's scenes with over the top acting.

An intriguing thriller.. a must watch!!
sanjubhat3 May 2020
#sanjuzzreviews Kavaludaari ( Crossroads) - 2019 Kannada movie streaming on Amazon Prime (English Subtitles)

Plot: The protagonist Rishi is traffic cop who is bored of his monotonous job and wants to be a part of the action like real cops from the crime branch. He gets his opportunity when skeletal remains of a family are discovered at a metro construction site. He gets interested and starts digging into it. The bones are old and buried around 40 years ago. The case is closed and no one is interested in this long dead case. He finds able allies in Anant Nag , the police inspector who had carried out the original investigation & an editor of a down and out newspaper.

Who were the poor souls who were murdered and buried? What was the reason for the heinous crime? Will the perpetrator be punished and poetic justice be delivered forms the rest of the plot.

This one is a slow paced, intriguing crime thriller with some standout performances especially from Rishi and Anant Nag. The film picks up pace in the last 30 mins and races to an awesome climax.

I would recommend it strongly because the narrative is extremely interesting with strong content.

Verdict: 9/10 Watch it. You won't be disappointed for sure!!

Definitely worth a watch!
madhukar3023 July 2020
Kavaludaari/Crossroads is a rare and gritty kannada movie which focuses on a unofficial police investigation after some skeletons are found during the construction of a flyover. The great choice of a asymmetrical character, a traffic cop who investigates the origin of the skeletons sets the pace and keeps us on the edge of our seats for the entire duration of the movie.

Full credit should go to Hemanth M Rao for writing and directing the movie. His work on both fronts remains very good if not outstanding. The movie is neither fast nor slow and moves at a good pace to keep us interested throughout. Editing is mostly good would have been better if about 15-20 minutes of the final cut chopped. Cinematography was definitely a notch above the usual industry standards. Songs & Music were almost under the radar without anything exceptional.

Casting in my opinion was a big let down as a lot of strong characters were let down with some ordinary acting. But considering the talent pool available in Kannada film industry, I am sure the director would have worked with only the best ones available to him. Costumes & makeup especially for the 1970s parts were notably accurate.

Thanks to Amazon prime I got to watch movies like this legally. The movie is one hell of a ride intrigued with lot of uncomfortable questions on human greed, which goes all the way to the top. Crossroads is definitely worth a watch with the family on a lazy Sunday evening.Another point to be noted is that, too many characters pop in and out of the script but rest assured all they would all fall in place as the narrative is crystal clear. This one is a gem from Kannada film industry.

Finally got around to watching my 2nd Kannada film, Kavaludaari, available on Prime. Should have been my first one, but Korean and Mallu movies kept piling up, but this was looong due.

Kavaludaari is a slooooooooooow thriller. More like a cop drama rather than a thriller. I am told that most stars have been busy remaking movies so this was a fresh original Kannada movie. If you're the kinda person who'd sit through 2.5 hours for a payoff at the end in the next 15 mins, you should totally check this out. While the movie was long, I am glad that there was no "we have to have something for everyone in this movie!" business. No romance, no flying cars and people breaking out into a dance sequence in their dreams, which usually fills up a decent amount of space in cop dramas these days.

But then, you could make an argument that if there were no fillers, the movie didn't really have to be soooooooooooo long. Was it dragging? Noooot really. Was it boring? No. Was it mind-blowing? Nup. I guess there wasn't enough of a hook...for me...to stay engaged throughout, but if you're in the mood to watch a cop thriller, check it out. A lot of people seem to have liked it much more than I did, so maybe you would too!

Bonus for me: I got to learn a few new Kannada words. Wasn't as tough to watch a Kannada movie as I thought it would be, I guess I might be able to pick up on it faster than I thought.

A low traffic cop (Rishi) gets interested in archeological findings that reveal a treacherous plot that happened 40 years ago. He takes the help of a retired police officer (Anant Nag) and a broke journalist (Achyutha kumar) to investigate history. The narration slowly gathers pace and becomes provoking. Rishi has a good personality, and his acting stands on his own against stalwarts like Nag and Kumar. Sampath is brilliant as the villain turned state CM.

Obvious and Have see that genre, Yet leaves you with an element of surprise!!
sandy-cariappa14 May 2019
Kannada movies are in this 'coming to age' zone. No one more than me is happy for the 'zone' we are in.

This is another venture of a team who are ambitious to make a mark in movie industry - don't get me wrong, they have done it!

This movie is a slow burner, but keeps you hooked with the amateur screenplay and direction. The 'HERO' is a go getter with no nonsense approach to ensure justice is met. He is good but has soo much potential to bring more out of him - all the best mate for the new ventures!!

I am so confident that the makers (minus the financiers) can do so many more thrillers that will get the Indian audience's feel value for the money they spend watching such movies. And oh!! This is not an edge of a seat thriller like some have said, but the makers have potential to go beyond edge of the seat genre - how about, falling off the seat genre?

Best wishes to the creative team to put up a good Psyc Thriller, I wish we have many more moves coming out of this makers (of course minus the producers) 😉

Excellent movie, great work.

Warning: Spoilers
The film is detailed with its retro modern oscillating theme, keeps you at the edge of your seat and explores the dark world of crime, revenge, politics. Rishi's casual and realistic acting complements that of Ananth Nag Sir, who is as always flawless. Achyuth Sir is very convincing as a despondent and desperate editor of a defunct press. Hemanth Rao seems more and more promising day by day. After GDSM, this is totally a different kind of movie. Engaging script ,clever screen play and excellent cinematography along with some retro style music with detailed direction is treat to watch.

Anything else said about the movie will just spoil it for you. Please don't pre-read any reviews, especially that of media, as some of them have given some important plot points without due spoiler warning. If you have already watched the movie read ahead.

***********************************MAJOR SPOILERS ********************************** The movie has many positives about which so many have spoken about. I especially liked the message of danger of traffic congestion. So here I am going to point out the issues I had with the film. And it is because of these issues I am giving it a 8 rather than a 10. I had four issues with the movie: 1. Were the crime branch police so dumb? While Shyam, a cop in traffic dept works along with Muttanna, a retired cop and goes on almost a hunt for the killer, which inturn leads to another 4 homicide 1 suicide and 1 unintentional homicide. The crime branch police seems to have no idea what's happening. Is our real police and detective force so clueless? 2. A Chief Minister of a state, is supposed to have excellent security. It's almost impossible for a traffic cop and get behind CM and point gun at him in a TV show behind curtains and a failed editor to poison the food given to CM without security even getting a clue. 3. I can be wrong in this, but I can't recall there was any reason established why Fernandes/Mailur Srinivas converted the place he burnt Naidu's car into a resort. All the info they had was the intruder of Madhuri's home went into the area where the car was burned. The connection is only apparent. The car was burned in some abandoned place. This means the murderer thought that it was an important place, purchased it and converted it into a resort. Why would you purchase a piece of land where you destroyed an evidence of the crime you committed? 4. The co-incidence at the end was a far fetched. But I had a fan-made theory. That it was not at all coincidental. The theory is after Shyam's father woke up from the injury he asked the doctor that who had saved him, assuming that Doctor knew Naidu, the Doctor told it was Naidu who saved him and also gave him extra money. But then Shyam's father learns that Naidu turned into a criminal and ran away with the treasure and police were after him. Remember that police all these years never knew that Naidu was not the killer, as the day Muttanna found out it was not Naidu, it was the last day of his duty as he quit that day. So everyone, till Shyam came, thought Naidu was a criminal. So Shyam's father would be confused as to how can a man who would save him, and pay extra money to doctor turn out to be such a criminal. He would have, over the course of the years told this story to Shyam, which inspired Shyam to know the truth about the man who saved his father but was then accused as a murderer and a thief. Because of this childhood inspiration Shyam joined police dept with the hope of knowing the truth and getting justice to Naidu. So it was not a co-incidence that Shyam's father was saved by Naidu, it is because Shyam's father was saved by Naidu, that Shyam became a police officer. This also explains Shyam's enthusiasm to join crime department. I was happy with my theory for a while before my theory was debunked my friend, he said that there has to be atleast one coincidence if this was not coincidence, still the finding of bones and Shyam being in the vicinity when it happened itself is a big coincidence. And the very fact that he did not try to search for the truth before the finding of the bones and the fact that he did not know the names of the people who were victims, all shows us that Shyam had no idea that Naidu was the one who saved his father, or atleast he did not join the police force for the sake of it. So there goes my theory. :P

Again these are the points on which the movie could have been better. But despite these things, which are quite tolerable, given the rest of the movie, this is a great movie, and in my opinion, is a torch bearer in the new trend of Kannada movies.

Fantastic Movie
prerulalli14 May 2019
Though I am new to Kannada movies, the bunch of movies i have seen have been Spectacular. Kavaludaari is one such movie ! Ananth Nag Sir and his acting is natural as always. The Story and the narration keeps you gripped. At some points, one might feel the screenplay has been dragged, but the climax satisfies your excitement. A must watch movie and a great way to get introduced to Kannada movies post-KGF.
