The Golden State Killer was arrested on April 24th, 2018 at his home in Citrus Heights in Sacramento County, CA for his decades-long crimes of rape and murder. He was identified by DNA left at his crime scenes and later verified by law enforcement. In addition to being dubbed the "Golden State Killer" he had also been known as the "East Area Rapist" (named for multiple rapes in east Sacramento, CA), the "Visalia Ransacker" and the "Original Night Stalker." His true identity was revealed to be Joseph James DeAngelo. He accepted a plea deal to plea "guilty" and received a sentence of life in prison. His case was the first crime to be solved by the use of "genetic genealogy." Since that time, several other suspects have been identified by that scientific method. (May 2022)
