... and I probably would not be watching this if not for the horror that is playing out in Ukraine, making me curious about this brave leader, Zelenskyy, who was once the star of this show.
The second episode takes up with high school history teacher Vasiliy Petrovich Goloborodko having just learned he has been elected president of Ukraine, based on an impromptu rant he was having about the failure of the Ukrainian government, that was - unknown to him - recorded by a student and widely circulated on the internet.
Without really trying it teaches the viewer much about the Ukraine of 2015. Although obviously proud of the nation's progress, it is more than frank about the corruption that ran rampant in government at the time. At this point Vasily, a very honest guy, is allowing himself to be handled by the professionals, understandably overwhelmed by the scope of what he has gotten himself into.
Some of the funniest scenes involve Vasily's sister, who goes shopping and scores an entire wardrobe for herself and a couple of boats for her dad just based on the fact that her brother is now the president. A traffic cop, realizing he has stopped the president's father, says that the traffic sign that dad violated is just being tried out, and he can go. Then somebody who dumped Vasily's teenage niece comes to the door - with his parents - proposing marriage. When that doesn't go over the parents propose that their son marry the 40 something sister.
What is implied by all of this is that everyone expects the president to be corrupt and thus to reward those who have been good to him and punish - or at least not reward - those have not.
So far this is a very interesting, funny, and even educational show. I'd recommend it.
