- A woman suffering in a loveless marriage, finds that upon his return from battle, her emotionally abusive husband suddenly appears to be a different man - in more ways than one.
- On Terra in the year 2520, leader Silas accepts an award in honor of his men who gave their lives in a mission to find Hydran, an element the Terrans need to clean their air, from a planet called Rexor IV. General Olin feels the honor belongs to both he and Silas's wife Vera who co-led the mission. Silas accuses Olin of jealousy and threateningly reminds Vera that she was not personally in the battle as he was, upsetting her. The next morning, General Olin calls an emergency meeting because they have less than 5 months of air reserves. Vera and Silas disagree about removing Hydran. Vera feels that the inhabitants are intelligent. Silas disagrees. Olin orders the mission. Vera confides in Yaro that her relationship with Silas "could not get any worse". Vera leaves their home wearing a breathing mask and walks through a violent underground area called "The Maze" to an upscale brothel and has sex with a man and a woman. The next morning, Silas announces he is leaving. Vera is overseeing the launch. She is called into a control center where they are tracking a battle Silas and his team have entered into. Olin activates a warhead that eliminates the natives but secures the safe return of the ship, which is fully loaded with Hydran. All the Terrans on the mission are killed including Silas. Afterwards, Vera feels untethered without Silas. But, the ship is detected reentering Terran orbit with two life forms on board, one of them is Silas. Silas reports that he doesn't remember much of the fight, but that only he and Matthews made it back on board. Later, he tells Vera how beautiful she is. The following day, he continues to treat her lovingly. Recovered footage from the battle suggests that Silas's account of the battle may not be entirely accurate. Two Rexorians came aboard the ship. Vera asks Silas what happened out on Rexor IV. But, he does not answer directly. Silas makes Vera breakfast and she suggest he should talk to a psychologist. He seems agreeable. She tries to leave, but Silas insists she have one bite of breakfast. Yaro warns Vera that Rexorians are dangerous and she should be vigilant. She returns home and Silas appears upset that she missed dinner. He follows her into the bedroom and they sleep together. Their bedroom is raided and Silas is arrested. Matthews has revealed himself to be a Rexorian metamorph under interrogation. Silas is also interrogated, but denies being a metamorph and appears to remember things only Silas could remember. A trial ensues during which Vera testifies that Silas is not a metamorph. Yaro testifies that Vera had been knowingly harboring the Rexorian metamorph, a treasonous crime that carries a death sentence. Silas asks to testify. He takes the stand and says he has changed, but he is still Silas. He agrees to confess to being Rexorian in exchange for Vera's immunity. Vera asks to address the court and defends that Silas cannot be Rexorian because he offered his life in exchange for hers. This willingness to love and sacrifice is the truest test that he is human. After Silas is exonerated, Vera asks him to tell her his real name. He says she couldn't pronounce it, thus admitting that he is Rexorian.
