Did You Know?
This series is based on the book Drama High: The Incredible True Story of a Brilliant Teacher, a Struggling Town, and the Magic of Theater by Michael Sokolove. The main character of Sokolove's book, Lou Volpe, was a closeted gay man who came out later in life. However, the character in the show inspired by Volpe, Lou Mazzuchelli (Josh Radnor), is straight. Multiple news outlets (including IndieWire, Vulture, and The Wrap) reported that during a January 2018 Television Critics Association press tour panel, showrunner Jason Katims said that he changed his main character from gay to straight because he wouldn't have been able to connect or relate to a gay character as well as a straight one (Katims himself is straight).
