An absolute delight and not the worst in show
TheLittleSongbird2 October 2023
Did like Season 1 of 'Be Cool Scooby Doo' on the whole, it took a while to find its feet fully in terms of the plotting and some of the character writing but the energy and humour on the most part were great and there were plenty of cool villains. When though it hit its stride in the second half of the season, with its more consistent quality and higher number of great episodes, the season at its best was quite great despite the animation style never being to my taste (which sadly only saw marginal improvement in Season 2).

All the previous Season 2 episodes were good to great, especially "Some Fred Time" with "There Wolf" being a close second. "Worst in Show" is one of the best of the season and actually one of my favourite episodes of 'Be Cool Scooby Doo'. It is one of the best and most interesting when it comes to character writing and character dynamics (in a way not seen a lot actually) and it is also one of the very few episodes where the animation, which was a continual issue for me, was not a problem.

It was a little disappointing that the dynamic between Shaggy and Velma, which was one of the most refreshing character dynamics in the franchise for some while, doesn't really resolve, with them going back to normal quite abruptly.

However, everything else works very well. As said, the animation is not a problem. The colours are more vibrant without being psychedelic and there seems to be more care. The gang are off model but the villain is well designed. The music is groovy and atmospheric and the mystery never lets go when it comes to the energy without being too relentless. The atmosphere is also strong and it never feels too simple or too complicated. The reveal wasn't earth shattering, but it also wasn't over obvious and it was clever in explanation and staging.

The use of flashbacks demonstrating the past was a good move, am not always a fan of flashbacks as when flashback heavy the momentum tends to go, and stopped explanations from being over explained. The script is funny and smart, while some of the humour is silly (like with Sir Frederick) it is not over silly to the point that it is stupid. The opening is hilarious. As said, the character writing and dynamics elevate the episode the most.

Especially with Scooby and Daphne, very quirky and adorable. Especially their song and dance sequence. The role reversing in the Shaggy and Velma dynamic was very interesting and lots of fun without either being too out of character. The villain is cool and fun with some creepiness, even if it is not original. The voice acting is spot on.

Summing up, great. 9/10.
