- TriviaThe title of this episode comes from the proverbial expression, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." It is a proverbial expression that dates from the early 19th century, although versions of it existed well before then. An expanded paraphrase by Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900): "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness." [02.17.2020]
- Quotes
Mira: [gruffly] You're not some stupid little girl who gets to make friends boyfriends and hopes and dreams. You are a soldier. If that makes you angry, think of who took it from you and focus on that.
Young Clare: [grimaces but doesn't cry]
Mira: Congratulations.
Young Clare: For what?
Mira: You're truly suffering now. It's beautiful. It means you're growing.

The Sincerest Form of Flattery
After the mole with high-level clearance inside the Agency is revealed we go back in time and witness how the other side schools their super spies.
'The Sincerest Form of Flattery' is the first real origin story of a side character where we learn the whole character arc with one episode. It also gives the twist of turning one of the episodic characters into the main player, and an integral part of the whole story. Intense cat and mouse game that simultaneously takes place in the past and the present. It also gives many answers to the viewers while opening new problems and possibilities for the characters.
It is amazing how 'Counterpart' continues to use all the tropes of the spy genre but manages to do this somewhat refreshing way.
