"Kötü Kiz" or "Vilaine fille" or "Wicked Girl" is a French/Turkish co-production from 2017, an animated short film that runs for 8 minutes including credits and was written and co-directed by Ayçe Kartal. This one won a decent share of awards, most recently the French Film Awards César and I can see why. It was an interesting watch. The film switches effortlessly back and forth between sweet and innocent childhood memories like teddy bears or scarlet shoes that were a gift from grandpa very early on and recurring dark references involving a mysteriously threatening creature. I think to make this work was a bit of a challenging feat, but they did and I applaud them for that. The film is so packed with metaphors and symbolisms that probably you have to watch it an amount in the double-digit figures to really understand almost everything and I think maybe it was a bit too much and could have been slightly more factual. But that is just my subjective taste and it is nowhere near leavong a really negative mark. Equally subjective is what you think of the animation style and I liked it too. Sometimes it is black-and-white, sometimes there is color, but never really in a truly joyful way, except the shoes I already mentioned perhaps, but there the film is still somewhat harmless. But dark enigmas await. Certainly not an animated short to watch with your kids, this is for the grown-ups. It is not horror, but pretty sinister nonetheless story-wise. The young Turkish voice actress did a fine job too, so yeah a good set of subtitles here is very much worth it. Go see this movie. I give it a thumbs-up.
