Michael Kerrigan is a dedicated, middle-aged priest in a run-down Northern parish, caring for the seriously ill mother who contributed to his miserable childhood. Christina Fitzsimmons is a beleaguered single mother of three, sacked from her lowly paid job for taking money from the till and preparing for her little girl's communion. Already struggling on meagre benefits her financial worries increase when her mother dies and she cannot pay for the funeral. However she keeps the death from her sister in order to claim their mother's pension. When she asks for Michael's help he becomes aware of the deception.
