Brilliant script, brilliant everything
wolfstar_imdb5 January 2020
Another really solid script by Heidi Thomas. The episode is written with such care and gives each of the many characters something meaningful to do, while consummately addressing a range of fascinating issues appropriate to the time period - diphtheria, vaccination, inner-city slum clearances (and how they disrupted communities), church hypocrisy and coercion. Nothing is overdone or mishandled, and there's a strong sense of solidarity and community. It's well researched and is way more sophisticated that you'd expect a primetime Sunday night drama to be - warm without being too sugary and educational without being didactic. In many ways it shows the rich social fabric that we've since lost. How many drama series are still this good in their 9th series?

A good start to S9.

The faces may change over at Nonnatus House, but the quality of this show remains high, and this episode is a fine example.

Warm without being overly sentimental, and still very hard-hitting, this was a good start to the 9th series.

Another lovely episode of call the midwife, heartfelt storylines, good acting, and just a general sense of hope.
