- Sister Frances: [carrying the newly abandoned baby out of Dr. Turner's office at the Maternity Home] Dr. Turner wants her to go to St. Cuthbert's, in case she picked up an infection from lying in the bin.
- Fred Buckle: Aw, poor little scrap. Can I, hold her?
- [Sister Frances hands the baby to Fred]
- Sister Frances: I told them I wanted to give her a name before she goes. Sergeant Woolf said I could, but then I couldn't think of anything.
- Fred Buckle: How about Primrose - rare little flowers that turn up in the cold.
- [They both sweetly smile in agreement]
- Mature Jennifer Worth: [ending diary monologue] The past is never lost to us - we carry it with us, everywhere we go. It is in every cell of our body and our soul. It is where we have been; it is where we learn to love; it is where we made our mistakes, and where we can consign them. The gift is knowing that the present will soon pass, and that the way we embrace it has the power to change everything.
- Mature Jennifer Worth: [opening diary monologue] Where do we begin? What marks the start of any new adventure? Is it the first step, the deep breath, the single leap of faith? And what do we leave behind us when the future calls?
- Brenda Donnelly: [as Mother Mildred and Trixie enter the jail cell] Have you brought her? Have you brought my baby?
- Nurse Trixie Franklin: Not this time sweety.
- Brenda Donnelly: But the policeman said you were midwives.
- Mother Mildred: We *are* midwives, and we're also nurses and we're your friends. While we're looking after you, we'll be whichever of those you need most.
