Defending the Controversial
In Defense of Henry: An Appreciation (2016)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
This twenty-minute featurette has interviews with directors Errol Morris and Joe Swanberg as well as film critic Kim Morgan, film professor Jeffrey Sconce and author Joe Bob Briggs and takes a look at the impact of HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER. The documentary covers a wide range of topics but the main focus is on the horror genre of the era and why this film really stood out compared to everything else that was out there. The people discuss the first time they saw the movie as well as the impact it had on them. All of the people interviewed are extremely good and share some great stories and thoughts and that's especially true for Morris who has an interesting take on the entire film, its message and why it's an "art" film. Morgan also talks about some of the scenes including those that make you want to root for the killer. The now infamous videotape sequence is also discussed in great detail. Fans of the film will certainly be entertained by this one.
