Slow paced episode that focuses on world building and character development, a new community is introduced
Holt34430 September 2020
Deborah Chow is the one who directed the third episode of Fear's third season, she is talented so nothing is wrong with the directing. The episode titled Teotwawki and it isn't as great as the two previous ones but it is a good one that slows things down a bit to make us see the aftermath of the deaths and to have time for some character development and getting to know the new characters and community, and it even begins with a TV commercial that Jeremiah Otto is in that explains some and dialogue later on shows even more backstory. As we follow Strand, we get to introduced to another big community that is located at a Dam, it's run by Dante Esquivel a person from Strand's past. On the ranch, Alicia meets the other teenagers and it isn't one of the best scenes of the season but it works as it develops Alicia and we learn more of the survivors of the Ranch.

The musical score and sound editing keeps surprising me in how good it is, how I never thought about it on my first viewing back in 2017 is strange. Cinematography is again incredible. I enjoyed this episode, probably more the second time than the first. It lacks action but has great world building and storytelling.

Also Ruben Blades made his return appearance in this episode as Daniel Salazar, a great character.

Improvement needed

Warning: Spoilers
A average episode if you look to last season, not good not bad, it was okay. The biggest shocker of the episode was that Daniel Salazar is still alive, he is with Victor Strand at Dante's place.

"TEOTWAWKI" / Air-date: 6 June 2017 / *SPOILER WARNING!* "Fear The Walking Dead" Episode #27:

♥ Well The President of the trailer-park association (Jeremiah and the people of his "Ranch") were kinda' thinking' ahead before the Z. A. -They even had their own survivalist infomercial with its own slogan and everything before it all went down!

"If you plan for the future, plan for a better one!" Not quite, "Let's Make America Great Again!" -But it worked for him!

Now, at the funeral for Charlene (The girl that we lost last episode.) Madison gets the opportunity to introduce Alicia and Nic to the whole culty-clan, who may or may not be on board to save Travis' poor family. Luciana, wants to be cut free from her sick bed so she can "escape", but she just doesn't think to ask anyone with the power to do it!

Madison pulls an old trick of Carol's, and decides to send Alicia to join the "Ranches" Bible study group She doesn't bring any cookies though, and that probably would have been a good idea, as the host of the event, Geoff ...is a big time snacker!

Madison and would-be-Governor-in-training Troy have a brief pow-wow about the future and the courtesy of making one's bed. Madison tells Jeremiah and his good son Jake (From "State Farm!") that maybe the whole "Ranch" might need to know what Troy has been up to out there at that military base. -Jake takes the hint (He's concerned that the "The Ranches" insurance rates will go sky high!) and he decides that he may know how to put the muzzle on Troy, but Troy seems to resent the whole idea!

Meanwhile, Victor Strand continues on his one man road-trip until he enters a large Mexican town looking for his good ol' mate, Dante. He nearly loses his head twice, but instead, he finds himself as a "hired" indentured servant! -He also receives a special guest visitor!

Later, Jeremiah shares a big secret with Madison and Troy convinces Nic (...who seems to have forgotten about Luciana all together!) to go out on a boar hunt. (Sounds suspicious!)

...and that's all she wrote.♥

TEOTWAWKI & Is Daniel Back?!
panagiotis199318 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The episode starts with a survivalist style tv ad by Otto, that was fun. The people at the camp wanna know who was shooting at the helicopter, so maybe a new threat? Hm. So Victor introduced Dante to us, let's see what this dude is all about. Madison is wrong blaming Nick for Travis' death. So when they said Bible study they really meant getting high, wow. This Dante guy is definitely no friend. Like Victor said to him ''water is the new currency''. Dante is more sadistic than I expected. He thinks Victor needs to repay a debt to him. What? This Dante guy has started to piss me off. Going for hunting in the middle of the night sounds kinda dangerous, you could easily attract walkers. Wait is Daniel really back? Hell yes, im so glad. Decent episode overall, my rating is 7.5/10.

Such a great episode!
guilhermeforcegui13 June 2017
One of my favorite episodes in the series ... We're finally seeing the personality of each character after so much carnage ... It's so much easier to cling to them now! In addition to this "humanization", the camera changes, the scenarios and the soundtrack pleases me ENOUGH! The pace of the episode worked very well, with pleasant scenes and even iconic, the scene where Alicia smokes weed with teenagers is one of them! Fear is followed a great way. Improving more and more and showing that yes can reach the level of The Walking Dead! I look forward to seeing the plot unfold!

One of the most striking aspects of this episode is its exploration of the breakdown of societal norms and highlights themes of racism, colonialism
fernandoschiavi15 April 2024
Ranchers begin asking questions about the helicopter attack and express hostility towards Madison's family. Luciana believes they need to leave the ranch as she feels it's not safe. Nick and Troy break past their contempt as they find more in common with each other and Alicia gets to know the younger crowd while smoking pot in a "Bible study." A team prepares to investigate the helicopter incident and Madison volunteers to accompany them.

Elsewhere, Strand arrives at the Gonzalez Dam, where he is reunited with old friend Dante Esquivel, offering him a partnership in controlling the dam's dwindling water supplies, but Dante instead has Strand imprisoned as he knows what kind of person Strand is, a thief. While in his cell, Strand is reunited with Daniel.

One of the most striking aspects of this episode is its exploration of the breakdown of societal norms and the rise of new power structures in the apocalypse. The conflict between the Ottos and the Native Americans highlights themes of racism, colonialism, and the consequences of past actions in shaping the present.

The episode also features intense action sequences, particularly when the ranch comes under attack by a horde of infected. These scenes serve as a reminder of the constant danger the characters face and the lengths they must go to in order to survive.

"TEOTWAWKI" is a gripping episode that continues to expand the world of "Fear the Walking Dead" while delving into complex themes of power, identity, and morality. It sets the stage for further exploration of these themes as the season progresses, making it a compelling entry in the series.

Enormous World Building In "TEOTWAWKI"
lunasnowhehe10 June 2021
During this awesome episode, we dive into The Otto's and their past in a very intriguing way as the mysteries slowly unravel. You have to really pay attention to the dialogue as it gives you more hints about their past.

The world building in this show is insane, you can notice that the society in Mexico is still intact even 2-3 months into the apocalypse.

Warning: Spoilers
3x3 Rating: 6.7/10

Storyline: In a TV commercial from 1996, Jeremiah promotes his four-part video series on how to survive "TEOTWAWKI", his acronym for "the end of the world as we know it."

American democracy is about to be destroyed at the hands of foreign nationals and greedy politicians, he warns. By stockpiling for the end and learning how to defeat the "urban hordes", Jeremiah promises that his tapes can teach anyone to survive.

Madison, Nick, and Alicia attend Charlene's memorial at the ranch. Sensing hostility from members of the community, Madison introduces herself to the ranchers and thanks them for taking her family in.

Ranchers demand an update on the helicopter attack, and Jeremiah assures the crowd that he is looking into the incident.

In line at the mess tent, a man accuses Madison and Alicia of being freeloaders. Gretchen, a young rancher around Alicia's age, introduces herself to Madison and Alicia, then invites Alicia to Bible study. Madison nudges Alicia to accept the invitation.

Nick takes care of Luciana at the infirmary. Luciana insists they leave the ranch as soon as she's feeling better.

Madison finds Troy lounging in Nick's bed in her bunkhouse. He opens up to Madison and says that he picked her, not Nick, to join his community. Madison insists Nick will earn his keep, and orders Troy to make the bed before he leaves.

Strand drives to a water depot at a dam, where he finds a long line of thirsty Tijuanans trading for water. He cuts to the front of the line and asks to speak with Dante. A guard orders him to wait in line and shoves him to the ground. Dante, Strand's former business associate, emerges and greets Strand.

In the bunkhouse, Madison assures Nick and Alicia that they can win over the minority of people who don't want them at the ranch. She also warns them to stay away from Troy. Nick insists they start over elsewhere, but Madison refuses to leave the relative safety of their new home.

Madison asks Jeremiah to protect her family from Troy and other hostile community members. She goes as far as threatening to expose Troy's twisted experiments at the fuel depot. Jeremiah refuses to tell people how to behave, but offers to teach her the culture of this ranch. He asks Jake to show her his video lectures.

Jake sets Madison up to watch Jeremiah's old video tapes. He promises to protect her family from Troy. Madison tells Jake she wants to find whoever shot down the chopper. He understands her desire to know who killed Travis.

Nick asks Alicia if she wants to stay at the ranch. She reasons that the ranch is just as bad as any other place, so why not stay.

Jake orders Troy to stay away from the Clark family. He reminds Troy that he's protecting him by hiding his psychopathic nature from others in the community.

Gretchen takes Alicia to a bunker for "Bible study". Inside, Gretchen and her friends pass around a bong and introduce Alicia to "Geoff", an infected head in a cage. Alicia bursts out laughing.

Madison discovers a collection of outtakes from Jeremiah's commercial. In the video, Jeremiah fights with his drunk wife and yells at a young Troy. She turns off the video when Jeremiah walks in the room.

Jeremiah explains that Jake and Troy are children from two different marriages. He admits that he and his second wife were alcoholics and that Troy took care of his mother towards the end of her life.

Dante and Strand trade stories over drinks. They have history from back when Strand and Thomas Abigail were doing business in Mexico. Strand tells Dante that Thomas is dead.

Alicia tells Gretchen and the other members of the "Bible study" group what life is like on the outside. She reveals that she killed a man, then admits it was an easy thing to do.

Dante leads Strand to a walkway on the dam and ambushes him. Strand watches as Dante's men push a prisoner over the edge into a pit of infected. Dante accuses Strand of being a thief and orders his guards to throw him over the edge.

In an attempt to make himself indispensable, Strand tells Dante that people will turn against him if he keeps serving water too close to his source. He offers to help organize an off-site water depot. Dante agrees to spare his life, and in exchange, Victor will become a worker for him: "You will feel just like the people you have taken from. You will feel powerless," he tells Strand.

Troy invites Nick on a nighttime boar hunt. Nick agrees and climbs into Troy's truck.

Madison informs Jeremiah that Nick is an addict. Jeremiah understands, having battled his own issues with alcohol. Jeremiah offers to show Madison why he tolerates Troy.

Troy and Nick hunt boar in the darkness of night with a group of fellow ranchers.

Jeremiah takes Madison to the "pantry", which is well-stocked with guns and supplies. He explains that he "broke" Troy in the old world, but that Troy now has a purpose in the new world. He has the killer instinct needed to survive. Madison pledges to help rebuild in Jeremiah's new world.

Troy stalks Nick around a corner, but then Nick tackles Troy and holds a gun to his face. Troy dares Nick to shoot and guesses it would take him 87 minutes to turn. Disgusted, Nick asks Troy what's wrong with him. "I just need to know why we spoil," Troy explains. Nick shoots the ground next to Troy's head and lets Troy go. Then, Troy tackles him. Nick grabs Troy's "scientific" journal, rips up the pages and laughs hysterically. Troy declares that they can now be friends.

Madison visits Luciana in the infirmary and explains that she doesn't want to leave the ranch because Travis died trying to bring them there.

Alicia and Gretchen leave the bunker in an inebriated state. Alicia crosses paths with Jake and he smiles.

Jeremiah announces to the community that it's been 36 hours since they dispatched a unit to investigate the chopper attack. He asks for volunteers to accompany Troy on a search mission to find their men. Madison volunteers.

At mealtime, Madison sits next to Troy instead of eating with Nick and Alicia. She lays out a napkin on Troy's lap.

Strand sits in a cell. Someone hands him water through a window. He chugs it, then looks through the window to see that the offering was given to him by Daniel Salazar, who says, "I told you I'd be your guardian angel.".

I loved the otto video, very much like breaking bad. The idea of the ranch is very interesting and very well treated. All the characters manage to adapt well and have very good development. Troy is great and I love his relationship with Nick and the relationship of mom and son with Madison is very interesting. I found the background of Jeremy and his family the best. omg daniel is back !!!!

Ratings keep sinking in this awful awful awful
larosat-3282120 June 2017
Awful show. The absolute worst with the weakest looking protagonist in TV history. I'm talking about Nick the junkie of course who makes my eyes hurt with that hair. Gave up on this abysmal excuse for entertainment a long time ago but am overjoyed to hear of the sinking ratings. Well deserved too. There is not one likable character on this insipid mess. The casting director should never be allowed to work again. A laughingstock of a series.
