75 minutes of a dull English travelogue
jennifer62615 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The Darkest Dawn is an excellent illustration of why you should avoid "passion projects" where the director writes the script, casts himself as the lead, and may even serve as Key Grip.

Fleeing from generally off-screen aliens as well as the requisite groups of roving bandits that form to take advantage of these situations, our protagonists walk, crawl, run, swim and boat from, through and toward various English towns that include Hungerford (site of the film's prequel), Oxford, Manchester and London. We know this only through occasional awkwardly delivered updates, as for the greater part of the movie, it's neither clear nor relevant where they actually are. The settings include a dilapidated estate; a dilapidated barn; a dilapidated chapel; and an inexorably long tunnel through a series of dilapidated basements. And those snapshots are effectively what I remember from the film, after watching it 4 hours ago.

Well, I do remember the actress who allegedly holds the camera for the found-film footage, because she bizarrely grins, jokes, and makes cutesy tween faces every time she is responsible for delivering exposition. Her huge toothy smile was one of the (unintentionally) creepiest aspects of the film. The characters otherwise melt into each other, lacking both distinct personalities and motivations.

The plot is equally vague. The girl and her sister follow whatever man is closest to their vicinity, adopting each new companion's mission and destination in turn. It doesn't work out very well for anyone, but you really won't care.

The most praise I can bestow is that the special effects were better than expected for a film with a £70K budget. I would have guessed at least £100K.

Should I rate this down because it is a found footage movie?
siderite3 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Worth mentioning that this is not Night of the Living Dead: Darkest Dawn, nor is it related to Wing Commander in any way.

From the get go you know that it will be a found footage film, with the young beautiful daughter (nose ring and everything) getting a new video camera from her lovely and loving and supporting family. You know things will turn to crap from then on...

Luckily, the action begins after only five minutes, with some spooky alien ships coming to invade by sending robots that take over human hosts. So something that combines alien invasion movies with zombies. At this point you wonder if it is even worth continuing to watch something that is clearly so referential as to be almost already watched. Well, I will tell you.

By minute 24 they've managed to kill all adults and remain in a group of outspoken teenagers. They also find some guns. After moving and talking to the camera, meeting the alien ship about once every half an hour, having the camera switch in and out of focus and having weird electronic errors whenever the action should have been good, having people shout at each other and shooting at each other... the movie ends.

So no, it's not worth watching. It was an almost decent effort, but it failed on amateurish editing, unlikable characters and too much monkeying around. Plus, there was no plot.

Boring!
RockChildRock21 April 2018
I think that 20 years of POV films is enough. The human race is about to disappear and the girl has cold blood to record every single passage of her day. On the other hand the script is nothing new and the film is too dark. It's difficult to say anything good about this dull movie.

Humanity is inherently evil?
drm26421 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is bad and pretty boring. Most of the time the characters are yelling at one another while one of them finds the time to film everything with classic shaky cam.

This isn't the main problem with the movie though. The film maker seems to be going off of the Walking Dead premise that mankind is inherently evil and is just waiting for an apocalypse to start turning on one another. Literally every time the group comes across another group of people the other group wants to kill/harm/rape them. I get that there are bad people out there and maybe there would be some people behaving this way, but realistically if aliens are invading people would band together against this common enemy. I would think even people that normally hate one another would set aside their differences in the name of trying to survive as a species. The fact that none of the characters bring this up is unrealistic.

The movie is an hour and fifteen minutes long. It feels a lot longer...

Worse acting than Hungerford
ambientlinestudio15 July 2018
Absolutely some of the worst acting ever. It's just too distracting from what could have been a somewhat enjoyable movie. The dialog is simple-minded and completely unrealistic, bordline art school cheesiness.

Poor
kerrihoneysett22 April 2018
This got 5 star reviews on Netflix and I'm honestly not sure why. Terrible, over acting - if you can call it acting. Situation escalates quickly, unbelievably so. I've seen better acting in at my local youth theatre.

I wanted to love it!
CARLbutwithaK3 October 2019
I must admit, I'm a sucker for most found footage films. So whenever I come across one I've not seen (or even heard of) before, I have to give it a try.

Almost immediately I wanted to give up. The acting isn't great, but that's expected from these low budget films. My issue was how quickly everyone gives up. The mum goes to work and before it even gets dark, the rest of the family are sobbing for her and the main character is saying her goodbyes to her on the camera. Also, on the second day, the government announcement says that the world would surrender right now if they knew how.

The CGI is pretty good to be fair, other than the plane crash scene ... the perspective was horribly wrong. The plane crashed on the road a few meters from the camera.

Ashens was definitely unexpected. I've watched him for years on Youtube, so seeing him in a film other than The Proxy or the Gamechild was a nice surprise.

I tried to finish it, I really did, but I couldn't. It's not even a full length film and although there were fast action shots every 30 seconds, it felt agonisingly slow.

This sort of tripe is why people skip past British Indie films
richarddeturner20 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Crikey where do I start???

You get the occasional bit of Sci-fi creeping into this utter lemon in the form of some shaky CGI but that is as Sci-fi as it gets.

There is no acting, continuity or story in this but it would probably make for a good first comic book attempt by a 7 year old.

The dialogue is pretty much a bunch of one liners that the 'writer' has nicked from his favourite films and books. I think the sound effects where directly ripped from the Call Of Duty games. It is obviously trying to be like Cloverfield but fails miserably and for some unknown reason the people the lead girl meets seems happy to film what is going on when she wants to be in frame rather than holding the toy guns that they just nicked from Maplins. The odd time the camera is dropped it always seems to land upright with our heroes perfectly in shot and focus and sometimes even seems to hang in mid air ;)

Full on spoiler alert. Why is Adam okay giving the old bloke a gun so he can kill himself but then falls apart and wants to blow his own brains out when he kills a dying girl in an act of mercy????

If you have no paint to watch dry then by all means watch this turkey but don't tell me I didn't warn you.

Brit B grade alien apocalypse flick
s32761695 November 2016
The Darkest Dawn is a Brit, B grade, alien apocalypse flick.

Its a not too shabby effort. The acting is alright and some of the special effects, whilst, very obviously CGI, actually do fit the overall, "end of the world", feel of the film quite well.

What does show are the clear budgetary limitations. Rather "ho hum" sets and weapons that look, for the most part, like badly dated, army surplus.

The scripting for this film could have been better too. The character narrative, is, at times, a bit cheesy. The loving family thing is over cooked but mercifully, does not last, as the aliens quickly arrive on the scene.

All in all, not a bad effort from a film with B credentials. On that basis a six out of ten from me.

Awful
HotFuzz27 April 2018
Genuinely one of the worst films I have ever seen. No logic, awful script, terrible acting, horrible direction.

Normally I'm down for a B movie sci-fi but this film has no redeeming factors. Just awful. 1/10 because I can't vote zero.

We follow a teenage girl as the world gets attacked by aliens
tarawilliams-821043 November 2016
I can honesty say this film was brilliant to watch and I highly recommend others to go and see it. It was visually beautiful and very intense to watch which is what I like to see. It reminded me a lot like the films Clover field and RED with the gritty feel. I was instantly engaged by the main character as well as throughout the story on her journey to keep herself, her sister and her new company safe from the aliens. I love that there was death always round the corner which makes you feel like you can't trust certain characters or think differently about them. The aliens were terrifying, made me jump every time one appeared.

This is defiantly a sci-fi film that keeps you glued to your chair and so if you like a lot of sci fi with a lot of death then I urge you to go watch it.

All the best to the cast and crew.

Tara.

So-so SF thriller.
Pairic26 April 2018
The Darkest Dawn: A sequel to Hungerford, the alien Invasion film. More found footage, filmed by Chloe (Bethan Leadlely) the younger of two sisters in the aftermath of an Alien Apocalypse. The Aliens have devastated cities and can turn humans into psychotic zombies. The women link up with three men who are on a quest and travel first through a London which is in ruins and then head up the Thames into the countryside.

The niceties of civilisation have broken down and this affects group after they are captured by human survivors who are just as monstrous as the Aliens. Rescued by the group leader Adam (Tom Scarlett), Chloe kills the man who was going to enslave her. Some of the resistance to the Aliens is led by religious fanatics, a preacher roars out scripture as the tank he commands fires on an Alien ship.

Alien ships are brought down, humans zapped by rays, humans turned into zombies, ravaging other people. The quests take another turn as a temporary cure for infected humans is found but a permanent one is sought. A surviving military group also protect a mysterious box.

So-so SF thriller. 6/10. On Netflix.

Award winning special effects??
amazon-0978712 February 2019
This movie apparently won an award for its special effects? God knows how!? In the first 5 min a plane flys over head (looks massive/accurate size) and somehow manages to crash in the neighbourhood to the left of an average sized semi-detached house (side on, wing span 30 ft) Unless that plane is entering the Tardis as it crashes it shouldn't get dramatically smaller. The acting is pathetic. The plot has more holes than a colliander. Just don't bother, however the lead actress is a really good singer, she should stick to that. Check her (singing) out

Brutal time waste... crap acting...main narrator young actress is so awful.... smiling and cheesy and empty acting... her sappy cheery messages to mom thru out movie as the world ends makes this film iruly painful to watch....its pure crap.. this is a bad rip off of cloverleaf (brilliant) with a shakey hand camera filming men killing each other like sadists over food... idiotic... during an enemy attack or any disaster...its a proven fact people join together... even in New York City during the power outs... especially against an alien enemy... this is pure crap... a waste of resources.... there are millions of brilliant scripts in the world and we make crap over and over...its such a waste!

I've no idea how this made it to Netflix. This movie has no redeeming qualities.I hate to knock independently made movies, but this fails entirely. Found footage ,poor acting, cliched script, laughable special effects. I will admit that I didn't make it to the end of the film, I just couldn't.

Best Friends Making a Movie?
moorek26 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I know some people will find it hard to believe but I watched this a second time albeit almost 3 years later. This time I watched it back-to-back with HUNGERFORD. I'll add a few new comments.

NEW: Seeing them back-to-back then I think HUNGERFORD is actually the better movie in some ways. It has a very low budget with a small group of local actors with a fairly straight forward plot. This one is a little more muddled with more actors.

This film has to be reviewed with the movie HUNGERFORD which flows into this. And there will clearly be a third one to wrap things up.

It has the feel of a bunch of friends getting together to make a movie. The acting is okay. A few actors are actually very enjoyable to watch and it would be nice to see them in a different role. In this movie, the main female lead recording the story is not particularly good. NEW: I had to check to see if the actors in the same roles were all the same and they are. I thought a couple, like Adam, were better in this movie. I also realized that the main female character with the camcorder reminded me of Dawn on Buffy. So if you like Dawn then...

The writing can be talky and often has the type of errors common in this type of movie:

*A group of people go from being relatively innocent to being skilled fighters in a short period of time. *To give us atmosphere, everyone gets dirty and wears bad clothes even though they are surrounded by houses and stores that would have better clothes. At least hats. One scene in a boat has them all cold but only one person decides to wear a hat. *The military and indeed normal citizens sink to a low level much too quickly. The movie feels dystopian even though it only takes place a short time after the invasions. *Low budget means using old facilities and houses. They break into one house to look for food but the house is clearly an old abandoned house. Cupboards are empty of everything. Another time they sleep outside an old building (church) without even arranging a way to get inside which has been shown to be helpful at times. *And they don't post a guard. You have aliens taking over people very fast. You've encountered other humans who are even worse. Both travel in the day and the night. So why aren't you posting a guard?

NEW: The errors above were more obvious on second viewing. The point about not keeping guards happens after a run in with murders/rapists on the river; some crazed people on a bridge; some infected chasing a woman in the woods and a night attack by the aliens. So no guard. In fact three times they are caught by different people.

For all the amateurism in the film, it was fairly entertaining even if I did have to fast forward through a short bit of it. It's not long to start with and you can watch it on Netflix so enjoy. NEW: I realized that with a limited budget, you have no choice but to add more talking material and try to build more of a character arc. This isn't the kind of movie that benefits from that.

I will watch the third one when it finally comes out.

Found Sequel
kosmasp9 August 2018
Found footage ... and a sequel too. And yet, if you did like the first one, you should like this too. It's actually slightly better. Though the effects are still very visible and I guess some would say bad (I guess budget wise there was nothing more they could get out of it).

This time around we get new characters and a dad that can't act if his life depended on it - or someone else's life for that matter. Anyway, that on the nose "acting" is bad, but let's say you don't have to endure a lot of it, because "drama" (as in Family Drama) is thankfully short, before we get to the meat of things ... the horror, action and science fiction of it

THE true unsung hero
rich-kiddle16 November 2016
The acting and Story was something that needed a bit more to be desired but overall a good watch!

The real reason why this film shines is due to the excellent camera wizardry by the camera men. I just hate it when films are shaking about due to armature handlers!

Jevon was a cameraman in the film and his work is beautiful. A true unsung hero who isn't credit for his efforts in the film and other low budget films like The Brokeback Mountan and 50 Shades.

I'm surprised to not see him on the top of the crew list!!!

Overall an okay film that has a lot more promise but made great from the crew

Keep or Kill
nogodnomasters21 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with 16 year old Chloe Murdock (Bethan Mary Leadley) getting a film camera for her birthday. We know her sister Sam (Cherry Wallis) is a nurse who sleeps with a Teddy Bear. Mum lets us know Chloe has rare blood, big feet, and can touch her nose with her tongue. Once we get all this information and figure out Chloe is a well adjusted atypical teen, the aliens attack and everyone is scattered to the wind. The two sisters venture out and quickly realize the aliens are only part of the problem as man has formed into groups that don't share power, even when they have a common enemy. Aliens can also infect humans with a bug that can cause them to turn on each other.

The main problem when you try to film "War of the Worlds" with one cheap camera is that you miss a lot...like aliens. Most of the film is people fighting among themselves. Chloe was an adorable teen, like Penny from "Lost in Space." Unfortunately they wasted her by having her hold the camera.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

This film is a good night's watch for families with teenagers. British sci-fi with well thought out and likable characters which can be forgotten with so many sci-fi films. I was absolutely astounded to read that the budget for this film was 45k?! I have no idea how they managed it. The acting is fantastic (my cousins are all huge Bethan and Cherry fans) and the special effects look no different from major Hollywood films, if not better as they aren't constant throughout the film. The film doesn't hinge of special effects or terrifying moments and I liked the fact that it dipped in and out of difference paces throughout. Made me want to go watch the first movie for sure. Well done to all involved and def one to check out of you are interested in supporting indie film in the UK.

Pretty decent for such a low-budget effort
jackiedm11323 May 2019
I love movies about aliens, apocalypse and found-footage so deciding to watch this was a no-brainer for me. After the first 5 minutes though I was afraid I had made a terrible mistake. But for some reason I kept watching and found it to be surprisingly not terrible. The acting was nothing to get excited about but there were some good moments. It had more heart than you usually see in low-budget alien/end-of-the-world films. The main characters were likable for the most part or at least understandable. Characters weren't too cookie-cutter (except for the bad guys - they were unimaginative and tiresome). Overall a decent effort for an indie.

Only good thing was the CGI
anthonypvo12 July 2018
If you like bland narratives, mediocre acting, and getting frustrated then this movie is for you. I watched through the whole movie, giving it a chance and hoping it would get better, however it just left me just frustrated and disappointed. No depth to the characters and found it hard to connect to any of them. I understand it was a super low budget movie but come on they can at least get the small things right... Feels like all of the budget went to CGI with little thought to the actual script, props, and directing. Too many mistakes if you notice small things or care about how the real world works and how people act. Anyone who gave this 10 stars either are somehow related/connected to making this movie or enjoy watching paint dry. I am all for indies and POV movies but this was just lazy.
