Not bad
tomfsloan7 January 2019
After being released from prison, a woman meets her ex-con cellmate and bad things begin to happen. The movie was fun and moved along fairly well. There were a few interesting plot twists here and there. On the negative side, the smoking was gratuitous and stupid.

Unconvincing
fredfeenstra3 January 2019
Interesting premise, good build up, weak end and the villain was not very scary. Characters were one dimension, except for the lead.

Amazon Prime v Lifetime Movie Network
Triviagrasshopper26 February 2022
Props to Amazon Prime for changing the title to something that doesn't make you roll your eyes when you see the name of what LMN is airing while scrolling through your channel guide.

Empty Cradle Gone In The Night Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?

She Cried No She Fought Alone She Woke Up Victim Of The Night A Friend To Die For If Someone Had Known

Those are the movies I loved as a teenager because the titles reminded me of Christopher Pike & RL Stine books:

Swim Instructor Nightmare?

The Girl In The Basement?

Killer Stepmom?

Deadly Garage Sale?

The Wrong Blind Date?

The Wrong High School Sweetheart?

Deadly Dance Competition?

Seriously? Lifetime seems to have just stopped caring about creating titles that will entice someone to read the descriptions of the plots and watch. If Amazon Prime hadn't changed the title to Early Release I would have just rolled my eyes and chuckled at the original title before continuing scrolling. This is certainly a better movie than what LMN usually makes now. WTF Lifetime? Do you know how many people are missing out on seeing good movies because if the title sounds ridiculous - the movie itself probably is too.

More an advertisement for the cigarette industry than a movie

Warning: Spoilers
Reasonable story up to the climax. Interesting villain until she apparently melts in water and disappears like the Wicked Witch of the West.

Lots of superfluous smoking. Granted, lots of people in jail are or become smokers, but this movie comes across as one where the director has taken instructions to make cigarettes the star of each scene, as opposed to any of the characters.

Leaves viewers hanging

Warning: Spoilers
This movie's climax had left me with a lot a questions, what happened to the villain? It's like when she drove her car into the lake she just disappeared from the movie completely. I must say the ending left me unsatisfied! Aside from that, this movie wasn't that good anyways! The characters acting was as wooden as rocking chair, and the mom was less than convincing as a villain. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone else!

Predictable Story but.....
rkaden-2815031 January 2018
This was a better than most Lifetime movie. As with all Lifetime movies, there's a happy ending but, this was more of an "it could happen" story.

Cheesy and uneven, but
r96sk23 October 2020
Cheesy and uneven, but 'Mommy's Prison Secret' manages to sufficiently entertain.

It's another one of those American television network films that is held back by the usual age rating etc. stuff. This type of story told with a much darker and menacing tone would've been potentially excellent, instead we get a very watered down version of events.

The casting is good, it's nothing spectacular but Kelli Williams (Taylor), Sarain Boylan (Meghan), Niamh Wilson (Bianca) and Justin Mader (Jeff) all work together pretty well - Boylan probably gives the standout performance.

Happy to say I enjoyed this, the ending is fairly poor but even then it has one or two things in it that I liked. 3*.

A scary nightmare very watchable
phd_travel20 September 2018
Movies for Lifetime with Kelli Williams are usually better than average and this is no exception. She plays against type here and you feel more for her in such a situation.

The story is a watchable nightmare scenario. A mom had to go to prison for a DUI and then when she is out her ex cell mate comes to stay. The cell mate / wacko is pretty frightening.

Worth a watch.

Quite scary.

A Tale of Two Ex Jail-Birds
lavatch2 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Early Release" (a.k.a., "Mommy's Prison Secret") is a well-crafted yarn focusing on a decent woman named Taylor Reynolds, who spent time in jail for a DUI and possession of marijuana (belonging to her husband) found in her glove compartment. Because she sassed the cop, more time was added to her prison sentence.

While in the slammer, Taylor ratted out her cellmate who was pushing drugs within the prison. For this act, Taylor was released early, and her cellmate Meghan was given six months in solitary. The film opens with the two ex jail-birds out of prison. Meghan makes a beeline for Taylor and plans to get even with her ex-cellmate.

The character of Meghan has to be one of the most interesting characters ever to come down the pike on the Lifetime Channel. As the soft male husband of Taylor says, "she is a piece of work." Of course, it is the weakness of the husband who is unable to tell Meghan that she cannot stay in the family home. The plot spins off that unfortunate moment in a well-crafted and action-filled experience. Meghan proceeds to take over the lives of Taylor, the kind husband, and the nasty teenager daughter, with Taylor forced to work as a mule in running drugs into the prison.

The dramatic persona includes a corrupt parole officer and a dedicated social worker, both of whom figure in the outcome. The performances were first-rate with the actress playing Meghan stealing the show. The most engaging moments are when Meghan moves into the house, flirts with the husband, corrupts the daughter, and blackmails her former cellmate.

Overall, this is one of Lifetime's better offerings with solid production values and briskly-paced action. Above all, there the unforgettable Meghan, whose presence is a surefire deterrent for all viewers to make every effort to avoid going to prison.

****

Warning: Spoilers
At first, when you look at the mother, she appears to be a woman who would be involved with the local PTA, not a woman recently released early from prison for driving while intoxicated along with drugs found in the car.

As the film goes on, and as the tension and her desperation both mount, she does look the part.

Soon after jail, the woman who was in the same cell shows up and decides to stay for good. Seems as though she has something on the lady and we find out that our heroine had squealed on her and she got additional jail time. It appears that there is a drug gang working inside the prison and the involvement goes very high up.

The twists and the turns of this plot are handled excellently and we reach a point that we do not know who we can trust. There are the usual threats, violence and kidnapping. The woman who entered their lives turns everything upside down in her attempt to gain revenge and force our heroine back down the path of crime.
