I started watching this show because I was interested in Kara Danvers, the bubbly adorable but highly capable young woman with a heart of gold. I loved her conflicts in Season 1 with her family, her sense of "normal", and her relationship with Alex. She had growth and a character arc and I loved her for that.
Right now, Kara has the least amount of development. I know they're going to make her see the error of her ways with James, and then lay off on Mon-El a bit with the superhero business (or they'll make her get together with him, which will make me want to bang my head into a wall). But where is her arc? I want to see her deal with her residual anger at her family for Medusa. I want to see her mourn her aunt. I want to see her relationship with Alex, as Alex spends more time with Maggie and is no longer able to dedicate 100% of her time to Kara. I especially want to see her deal with complex moral issues like how she chooses who to save, or if there should be a regulatory system keeping her powers in check in case she gets Red-K'd again or corrupted (cmon, there's no way the government would just let her be).
I even want to see her break down a bit. She's infallibly bubbly and happy despite what she's gone through - where does that come from? Does it falter at times? I actually do like the bit of seriousness that she had this episode, so I hope they continue with that.
And that last scene with Mon-El was well-done because of Melissa's acting, and I enjoy where it's going as long as they don't try to make it a slow burn. It's such a cliché relationship. Please, god, I don't care if Kara ends up marrying a cactus plant, but don't mash her with Mon-El. He has nothing to offer her in terms of personal growth or even support.
My favorite parts were undoubtedly the Jonn/Mgann scenes. The "I wanted to be your friend" broke my heart and redeemed the episode. Alex telling Jonn to forgive her was beautifully done. I still want to know more about Mgann and Jonn because they're genuinely interesting characters. The thing about this show is that there are so many incredibly interesting side characters - Lena, Mgann, Jonn, Maggie, even Winn. But Mon-El is taking up so much unnecessary screen time. Please redirect the focus of this show to its literal namesake, or at least the better side characters.
I don't know how I feel about Guardian just yet. I love the argument between James and Kara about being a hero, but I also feel like James is taking away from Kara's arc. We'll see how it pans out.
Sanvers, of course, was adorable as always. Keep it up.
Overall, I also just think the show needs a cohesive plot. Something to tie the episodes together instead of petty criminals who get defeated after 10 minutes. Give Kara a real challenge in a smart, two-dimensional villain.
