Bold sanctuary
TheLittleSongbird4 November 2022
"American Dreams" and "Sanctuary" make up the two part Season 18 finale. Both were a year or so ago very lowly rated and are divisive episodes on other sites too, so if one is feeling apprehensive about watching them that is understandable. On first watch, both were to me solidly executed episodes and among the better first viewings of all the Season 18 episodes. The season did have good and more episodes but was generally rather unsatisfying.

My rewatches of "American Dreams" and "Sanctuary" were actually every bit as good as on first watch. Appreciate both even more now with more knowledge of the topic(s) covered. It is one of the season's boldest and most relevant topics explored in "Sanctuary", while the story is far from executed perfectly and there are better and more consistent season finales for 'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit', "Sanctuary" does a lot right and is a gutsy, brave episode that is nowhere near as bad as indicated here. As far as Season 18 goes, there are far worse episodes than both those two parts (one of the few lowly rated episodes that are nowhere near close to being as bad), many.

"Sanctuary" succeeds more than it fails. It doesn't look drab or gaudy, and the editing is far from slapdash. The music avoids getting too melodramatic in the more dramatic moments while not being too low key, it has always been a good move that it is used relatively sparingly. The direction especially shines in the character interaction in the second half. The script on the whole is beautifully balanced, there is a lot of talk but taut enough to avoid it from waffling.

The story is uncompromising, moving and hard hitting once again, a tough topic that was very relevant then and not too irrelevant now handled very well, movingly and disturbingly, on the whole. It's not too simple or convoluted, with a lot happening but not feeling too much. The acting all round is excellent, Mariska Hargitay and Raul Esparza taking centre stage and giving intense performances.

Will agree that it is, like "American Dreams", heavy handed (the biggest criticism commonly directed at it) when it comes to the politics, considering the subject that was inevitable in a way.

Did think too that Barba's ethics were anything but ethical, don't remember him seeming willing to jeopardise his career. As well as feeling that the ending was too much of a running out of gas cop out that didn't have anywhere near the amount of tension it should have had.

Overall though, much better than given credit for. 7/10.

Face of Evil
bkoganbing12 August 2020
The cncluding part of this two part story shows how difficult it is to get a conviction of the two rednecks who did a monstrous hate crime against a Moslem family. For one thing the chief witness against the pair is gunned down rightnear the court house by a friend of the pair who thinks he's struuck a blow for his friends in particular and the white race in general.

In the end it's Emma Myles who is the wife of one of them who comes forward. She and her son have endured years of abuse at the hands of Tyler Ellis Burke.

As for Burke he's a Liberty Valance type villain with no redeemable features whatsoever. Chillingly evil and brutal and he too thinks he has a friend in the White House who understands.

It's not a promising future for the city or the nation when this episode concludes.

Tyler Eliot Burke

I first saw Tyler Eliot Burke in one my favorite Blue Bloods episodes as a wheelchair bound veteran with brain trauma. In this episode of SVU he plays a hateful anti-Muslim to great effect.

I look forward to further acting challenges for this young man who strikes me like Vincent Di'Nofrio did back in "Full Metal Jacket" and "Men in Black."

Also, one of my favorite SVU episodes.

Superb episode. Brilliant SVU unafraid to tackle difficult topics!

Excellent conclusion to the 2 part series finale. It wraps up the story from the previous espisode and introduces more depth and a new linked storyline, cranking up the tension and showing characters making difficult choices about what is right and what is wrong in an awful situation. This story rings true to life. SVU shows again that it is not afraid to speak truth to power. This show is not afraid to explore complex and difficult topics and highlight some of the atrocities and hate crimes taking place in today's political climate, and give insight in to the subsequent impact on stretched law enforcement and suffering communities.

These 2 episodes had me on the edge of my seat. Difficult watching at times but essential and brave storytelling. Thanks to everyone involved in bringing these 2 episodes to life. Superb acting from everyone. I am a long time fan of this show and SVU just gets better and better. Love this show!

P.s. The seriously skewed rating given for these 2 excellent season finale episodes is nonsense. Don't believe it for a second. The show consistently scores 9/10 rating and then for 2 episodes exploring topics some people don't like it suddenly drops in quality to 5/10? I don't think so. People's political agendas are showing and their hate is clearly getting in the way of their common sense, which ironically enough is exactly what these episodes were exploring.

Great 2 part episode

Don't let the comments of low ratings deter you from watching this finale story, the people that are railroading the episode for it's "truthful" description of America right now is great, it shows exactly what is happening due to the president of the United States and probably touches too many nerves of people that don't care, great job in highlighting what it's like SUV

Glad I only watched this after the nightmare...

Because Orange *was* bad, y'all! I know that many will disagree, but for those of us who watched from abroad, this is a near-perfect depiction of Trump's America: racist, corrupt, ignorant and violent. The perpetrators are in the best 'Proud Boys' tradition. As to the main witness who was gunned down by a redneck: Kyle Rittenhouse anybody?

I appreciate the disenchantment occasioned by making people who too often victimise into the victims, but it *has* happened. However heavy-handedly, it makes the point of what the rest of the world saw the USA becoming.
