Drama, Local Business, Digital, Women’s Empowerment Energize Mipcom 2016

Cannes, France — Invigorated by record attendance, multiple series screening, powerful keynote speakers and a slew of stars, the Cannes’ 2016 Mipcom content trade fair also saw major announcements which underscored TV market trends at large.

If Mipcom 2016 is anything to go on, more film companies, including iconic outfits, are piling into TV; the world’s TV drama boom looks ever-more driven by pay TV and high-end drama; digital platforms are going ever more international; in production, Hollywood’s studios are increasingly going local. On a burgeoning international drama production scene, Nordic Noir powers on.

Such is the complexity of signing off on TV business these days that few large deals are now mooted and closed at TV markets, which function rather to power deals forward as well as marketing platforms for the confirmation of past-month dealings. But Mipcom 2016 strategic moves reveals were legion.

Mipcom: Sony Pictures Television World Premieres ‘The Halcyon’ at Cannes

16 October 2016 12:37 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Cannes, France — Set in the lap of luxury at the Halcyon Hotel in World War II-era London, Sony Pictures Television’s “The Halcyon” may prove catnip to some of the same audiences that warmed to “Downton Abbey” or, longer ago, “Upstairs, Downstairs.”

But if the early stretches of the first episode are anything to go by, “The Halcyon,” which world premiered Sunday evening at Cannes Mipcom trade fair, is faster-paced, music-laced and more multi-stranded than either of the series with which it will inevitably be compared.

Moreover, rather than showing how aristos adapt to changing times, “The Halcyon” looks set to chronicle how the occupants of a hotel — from the imperious owner, Lord Hamilton, to the minions toiling downstairs — get through the Blitz, just five months away when Episode 1 kicks in. Olivia Williams (“Anna Karenina”), who plays the cheated-on Lady Hamilton, said at a Q & A before Sunday’s screening that “The Halcyon” shows the intensity of »

Mipcom: Creating the Look of Sony’s Period Drama ‘The Halcyon’

16 October 2016 8:46 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Sony Pictures Television’s eight-part period drama “The Halcyon,” which is world premiering at Mipcom on Sunday, may be set in a glamorous London hotel at the start of World War II, but the look of the show was partly inspired by Aaron Sorkin’s political drama “The West Wing,” according to producer Chris Croucher, who previously worked on “Downton Abbey.”

“We talked a lot about ‘The West Wing’ when we were designing the set because everything is connected, so you can do this great walk-and-talk thing from the foyer to the bar to back-of-house areas,” Croucher says.

Two stages of composite sets were created for the show in West London, including the large hotel lobby and bar interiors, bedrooms and back-of-house areas such as kitchens. Shots on set had to be seamlessly blended with those of the hotel’s exterior and restaurant, which were both shot on location. So, for »

Destined to be the ancestor of Jor-El, the future father of Superman, and Kal-El, the future Superman,, Seg-El is the scion of the once prosperous El family and is blessed with an intuitive brilliance for all things technical. He is now living in Krypton’s lowest caste after his family was stripped of its rank.

Cuffe, born in London, recently appeared in Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant’s “Florence Foster Jenkins,” and has a recurring role on ITV’s upcoming drama “The Halcyon.” He is a graduate of Ireland’s National Academy of Dramatic Art, The Lir Academy.
