TROY THE ODYSSEY is another lunk-headed bargain-basement historical epic from the team at The Asylum. It's loosely based on the two Homer epics THE ILIAD and THE ODYSSEY, with a low rent retelling of the siege of Troy followed by some even lower-rent adventures with Odysseus and co. You know the score with Asylum flicks by now, so expect thoroughly wooden acting and some appalling CGI monsters and the like. Bizarrely, this movie was shot in Thailand, which doesn't really look like the Mediterranean at all, but it's the mindless plotting that lets it down.

Don't waste your time!
Wizart3D17 December 2017
Amateur hour on a cheap budget that shouldn't even be considered a B movie. I actually feel sorry for those that wasted their time producing it. The 10 star ratings are highly misleading. If you haven't seen it already, may I highly recommend the 97' TV Mini Series/ Movie (nearly 3 hrs long), "The Odyssey" with Armand Assante as "Odysseus".
A far from epic odyssey
TheLittleSongbird25 May 2018
Did not watch 'Troy the Odyssey' with high expectations. It looked horrid and some of it sounded ridiculous. Saw it however out of curiosity, as part of my low-budget film quest (yes, have got a good deal of quests going on, some of them completest ones) and especially because the story/poem is so timeless.
A poem/story that deserved an infinitely better film than 'Troy the Odyssey'. It really does Homer an injustice (he would organise a protect if he saw this) and manages to be even worse than it looked and even more of a mess than indicated in the premise. That it is not a waste of a good concept film made me less annoyed than some other films seen recently. My annoyance though is aimed at how poorly done in every single way 'Troy the Odyssey' is.
Nothing good going on here. The acting lacks any kind of passion or emotion, even skill or direction. No exceptions here, even the lead character who actually is one of the worst examples.
'Troy the Odyssey' uncharismatic, wimpy and annoying character writing and writing that is far too excessively ridiculous to be guilty pleasure cheese and too awkward and dull to be tongue in cheek works against them. As well as non-existent direction.
Direction that fails to convey any urgency, tension, fun, suspense or emotion in the numerous scenes that need them. The action-oriented scenes are the complete anti-thesis of exciting, are poorly filmed and looks so awkward in the choreography. The whole story is just lifeless, completely fails to make any sense at all and on the wrong side of daft that it's insultingly ridiculous. Nothing suspenseful or fun here.
Visually, 'Troy the Odyssey' looks cheap as sin, with an overuse of truly risible special effects that never gels with the setting or looks real, dizzying camera work and editing and shoe-string budget production and costume design. Faring least bad is the music, which at least tries to appeal to the ear and give a little urgency, not a compliment sadly because one doesn't remember it and it's often not placed that well.
Overall, far from furious and as the opposite of good as one can get. 1/10 Bethany Cox

Waiting for the funny part

Ten minutes into this I kept thinking it was like a Sharknado/Zoombeavers flick. So bad it's funny. But, sadly, they were really trying to make a serious movie with people that CANNOT act. I mean, I've been to high school productions that blew this away. Agamemnon acts like he just got off the set of WWE. And they storm Troy with about 15 extras. Bad. Just bad everything. Watch anything else but this.
How do such awful movies get made?
edsnook17 March 2018
I was browsing on Netflix. The acting is so amazingly bad. I mean who invests their money to make such awful crap. And how do they make money? I wish I could give a movie zero stars.
Warning: The only reason the cumulative rating is 2.6 and not a zero is one person gave it a ten. I am sure it is someone associated with it.

Truly, a Waste of Time
tclark5517 March 2018
This is the Trojan War and The Odyssey as taken from the movies. You have Achilles a la Brad Pitt in Troy, you have the kraken from Clash of the Titans, and the costumes reminded me of The 300. Everything, from the CGI to the costumes, acting, sets, and script were horrible. This is not a bad movie that is funny and enjoyable; this is simply bad, truly a waste of a viewer's time.
I have nothing to say about this movie

I am Greek and I was thought Iliad and oddysey in ancient Greek back in high school. This movie is garbage. It was a disgrace to me watching this thing.
I won't even go into the wrong story plot scenes. Just don't watch it and waste your time.!
Truly pathetic

Low-budget wonder
nehanks22 March 2018
Low-budget wonder. I have been reading some of the other reviews and can see that most of those people have been watching the studio huge budget movies and trying to make them comparable to this. I am amazed that on a small budget someone could make something as true to the actual writings of Homer as this. I think this should be reviewed only by people who have read the Iliad and are in the spirit of that writing. Kudos to those who put their time and effort into this excellent low-budget film I believe many people will follow in your footsteps. We are sick of studio cookie-cutter garbage.

Surely NOT "Based on the Epic Greek Poem as sung by Homer"
ruivilarinhosilva29 March 2018
Even having only seen the first 10 minutes there were major flaws in the argument right from the begning, such as:
Also the characters do not feel authentic at all, the acting and costumes are bad. With all this and the story being so wrong with respect to the one by Homer, it is difficult to imagine whom this movie would please.
- Helen was the wife of Menelaus, brother of Agamemnon, who doesn't even appear, not of Agamemnon himself.
- The war in Troy lasted for 10 years, in the movie appears to be less than a day.
- Circe was never in Troy at all, she lived at an island where Odysseus later stops.

Odyssey?

Warning: Spoilers
This is supposed to be a rendition of Homer's Odyssey?
Discounting the actors, the costumes, the special effects, one would think that the story would at least resemble the work upon which it is based. Helen was not Agamemnon's husband: his brother Menelaus was. Agamemnon did not kill Helen or Paris. Circe was never in Troy and certainly did not kill Achilles. The Kraaken was never mentioned in the Odyssey.
I was not expecting much from the title. I bailed after about 9 or 10 minutes. If all of these discrepancies occurred even before the start of Odysseus's homeward journey, I can't imagine how much worse the movie became. Perhaps my "appreciation" of the film would have been better has "Odyssey" not appeared in the title...... Nah.
Too bad. The Odyssey is one heckuva story.

I laughed so hard at the cheap costumes that look like they came out of a goodwill store. Bad acting and asphalt road in ancient Anatolia. Lol.
This isn't a movie but a disgrace to Homer's epic poem.
And any 10 rating is a fake silly review.
This movie is a complete waste of time to watch
brixtonwa26 March 2018
Where to start this review well first off the acting is horrible you have so many different voice accents in this movie. And the acting is really bad there are some individuals that have acted and other movies and television shows who should be doing a good job but are not. The only thing it actually is good is that a lot of the men are good looking and that's really all this movie has going for it.
Terrible

Warning: Spoilers
Let me start by saying I did not finish this movie. I fast forwarded through parts of the movie due to terrible dialogue and utter boredom.
The acting in this movie made it seem like uncle Fred and aunt Debbie decided to make a movie, and find all the acting school rejects to play in it. The acting hurt so bad, I fast forwarded through most of the film because the dialogue was so scratchy, and carried no emotion throughout the entirety of what I saw.
To top that off, the movie had some major flaws in it, guy gets stabbed in the chest but when he falls to the ground, the wound is now in his side, and he is still breathing and alive, as well as blood splattering (way over the top, but I'll touch that momentarily) on the wall, then suddenly it all vanishes and there is no trace of death. Times like that, very obvious mistakes, I am not the guy who watches a movie looking for mistakes either.
The fighting was choreographed.... well no, it wasn't actually. They bought some swords and said, "swing these someplace and we will make it work." Well they didn't make it work. One scene in particular, on the fighting, a guy swings his sword against a mans shield, the man falls to the ground. But when the camera pans up, the killer has not made another move, but the shield guy is laying against the wall, dead. He was never hit with the sword, he was never hit a second time, and he fell straight down as you see him land on the ground. Then suddenly he is dead, lying roughly five feet away, up on a ledge about chest height, as if thrown there. The fighting is the worst I have ever seen to be honest.
The visual effects.... Don't exist. And I wish I could talk to directors about this, but if you have a twenty dollar budget, don't try to put in a sea monster as big as a boat, and a cyclops. It just looks horrible. The cyclops made me laugh it was so bad. Clearly put in via computer (as they have too, but they don't have to make it so obvious) He didn't match the scene at all. He was out of place with the background, and didn't collide with the environment right. He seemed to be in another dimension in his scene, which was a very uneventful scene.
My last point, the violence is your typical Syfy way over the top blood, but no gore. People getting slashed and blood splatters all over faces. However, all the actors wear way too much makeup for the time, and they were never dirty or sweaty, and their clothes looked fresh from the press, but that's beside the point. The point is, the violence was your typical over the top, if you don't mind the goofy syfy violence, it hit the nail on the head there. The sound effects didn't match though, someone gets stabbed and you hear a waterfall in the foreground as if blood is leaking all over. But when the sword is withdrawn, no blood is on the blood, ground, or shirt of the person stabbed. This happened all throughout the movie. Someone would get slashed, and you hear this was over the top sound of gallons of liquid splashing as if waves on the beach, and when you see the wound, it's a pin prick on the end of the characters finger.
All in all, I would never recommend it, it wasn't even good as a goofy, laugh at the acting type of movie.

I got through five minutes of this, and that is all you need to see how bad it is.
If you're going to attempt a film about Troy or any epic subject, you'd better know what you are doing, and that must include a budget that reflects the challenges of such a project.
The costumes were the first red flag, they looked like they were thrown together with no regard for authenticity of any kind. 'Details' were amateurish and immediately distracted from what was happening.
Dialogue was just bad, with modern expressions that just made me cringe.
The whole idea of a movie is to suspend disbelief and to be immersed in the story. This was not possible with this level of incompetence.
There are far better treatments of this epic story and far better ways to spend your time.
Run away.
This Movie was made to launder money
yocomprocosas28 January 2020
This Movie is by far the worst movie I have ever seen. The acting is horrible, the fighting is horrible, the story is horrible. The movie had to be made with drug money an the lowest budget possible. I mean they must have found volunteers for everything, people with no experience, not even high school plays.
There is no way this movie made any money, besides the drug money they laundered thru it.
Unless you enjoy slow, cruel and usual punishment, do not watch this horrible movie.
Great movie

I think it's a great movie, the subject is great, but some people are complaining, I dont understand why. If Brad Pitt was in this movie, I am sure that everyone will vote better, I watched it with my daughter and we both enjoyed the film, thanks to the producers and players,Well done

Where does one start with this beautiful dumpster fire of a "film".For starters the acting feels like a bunch of wannabe actors that were plucked from the street.A Lot of thing were wrong in this movie for starters norse mythology was mixed in with greek mythology aka the kraken.Circe was never in troy at all she was in an island that Odysseus. Also the war in troy lasted 10 years, also the skipped all the important trials and obstacles odysseus faces on his way back to ithaca.Which also was 10 years but all felt like a day.And don't get me started on this amatuer hour CGI,but that's what expected from this low budget film.It seems that most of their budget was used on the poster for christ's sakes. One more thing that i will add is the slogan for the movie was marketed as "the way home was hell" and none of that was made apparent in the movie.I give this a 1/10 skip this movie don't waste your time.

Bad....Everything
mehfre6 January 2019
Really bad acting from everyone on screen (yes, it's that terrible--Agamemnon was apparently portrayed by an evil, overgrown yeti of some sort) , bad dialogue, bad (make that hideous) casting, bad direction, bad costumes, bad cinematography, you name it. It's as if no one involved in any way with this production had a lick of pride in what they were doing except to cash a paycheck they didn't deserve.
Pitiful...

The actors, the props, the dialogue, I couldn't even let my imagination let me get into this movie. This was after about ten minutes. I don't like to be biased, but did
they want to cast ugly actors intentionally? Watch the 300....
