Nothing, Michigan
questl-1859213 November 2020
As a Michigander, when I saw this title I had to watch it. It's not awful or anything but this is a nothing movie, wholly forgettable. It's just off, it lacks any sense of polish at all, not just in a visual regard but the performances and the story all feel clunky and underdeveloped.

Again, not terrible but not worth seeking out in any sense. There's just not anything here to really separate it and make it stand out at all. If it happens to be on, sure but there are better background movies too .

Two Leads Good
ffweir25 February 2020
The two leads were very good. Lead villain pretty hammy honestly. I started to fast forward when he came on. Very annoying. I've visited several times and live near Ann Arbor and no one that I know of in the Upper Peninsula speaks like a character in "Fargo"! Thought some of the script also was too derivative of "Fargo." But not bad overall and fun to see Michigan scenery. It was clever to have a black kid from downstate in the Upper Peninsula. Definitely would stand out. But a smart college kid would know about things like ice fishing I think!

A Sad Profile of Middle America
lavatch23 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Like the film "Fargo," there was a satirical portrait of a small town not in northern Minnesota, but in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. But the overall effect was a sad commentary on a hardscrabble life.

The characters of the little town spoke in a heavy accent that may or may not be accurate. But the clear intent of the filmmakers was to portray them as hicks.

A similar satirical approach was taken to the serious topic of illegal drugs, which appeared to be the staple of the community. David was on the run from two thugs in Miami. He had a big stash of cash that he had stolen from them. Yet he inexplicably starts up a thriving meth business in the small Michigan community.

Madison's boyfriend Chris decided to get into the meth business after he impregnated her. He evidently died in an explosion. Madison's major goal in life is apparently to escape from the town.

In sum, the film's satirical goals fell flat as the overall feeling imparted on the audience was that of life in middle America that was nasty, brutish, and short.

Pointlessly Idiotic
mcjensen-0592424 November 2020
Welcome to a movie where every character is woefully miscast. The accents and mannerisms of the locals are overdone, absurd and insulting. Add an annoying soundtrack and those stupid split screen scenes I never saw the point of and you have a mess of a movie you'll be lucky to get halfway through. Main character is an LL Cool J wannabe who has the white girls throwing themselves at him. The villains are so badly portrayed you wish you could slap them through the screen. It amazes me when things this horrendous actually survive editing and make it to a wide audience. The writers owe every viewer an apology and a refund where applicable.

Waste

I didn't make it twenty minutes into this movie. The main character was dreadful and the plot uninteresting. The waitress in the diner sounded like she took a wrong turn from Fargo.

Horrible

From a Michigander point of view the "michigan accent" is not real. It's a mix of canadian and southern. Not what our accent is. Made us look like we are backwood hicks with no understanding and uncivilized. Maybe should've done some research on our accent and what it is. I can tell ya the yooper people are none to mess with.

Hey kids let's make a movie. If you can figure out the accents here please pray them. If there's a plot I can't figure it out. Whatever you pay to see this movie feel good that you have supported the untalented.

Michigander Review
megantu23 March 2019
I'm a Michigander and Yooper. For an independent film this was pretty darn good. People have to remember this is not hollywood money and most actors/actresses are up and coming. All "actors" did very good. And the yooper actors were pretty spot-on. Filming in one of our small towns was great to see - Michigan is quaint and beautiful. The other reviewer said he can't figure out the plot well he may have been doing the meth because the plot is very obvious. The humor intertwined with the the "chase" was good. And especially, if you know Upper Michigan! Kudos and keep going!

From a guy that's from the town that this movie was filmed I can easily say this movie is trash. I'd much rather use this movie film to wipe myself while I'm at my own ice shack. It's a disgrace.

Decent
schematicmusicsection6 December 2020
This movie was advertised in our local paper, so we decided to check it out. The story is a little bare, and missing thrills. There's a lot of Fargo influence for the villains, and the Michigan accents are leaning more towards Minnesota or Canada. The character motivations are somewhat murky, and that can make this story a little difficult to get invested in, but it has its moments.

Pure Michigan Cheese
oaklandreviews23 February 2020
This is a must watch if you are from Michigan...They cover almost every Michigan euphemism....need security cameras installed? (Duct tape, that's a Detroit install)....pasty's....people in small towns in Michigan....small towns in Michigan in general.....the acting is especially bad by one of the bad guys, so bad it becomes it's own cheese....really, if you are from Michigan or have spent a lot of time in Michigan you will probably enjoy this in some way

Awesome Film Festival Movie

I live in Marquette and this movie sums up the UP pretty well. Whether that be from the pastys to the accents to a currently large problem crystal meth. Plot is entertaining and the acting is surprisingly good.

Yooper Approved. You betcha eh!

Independent film Nowhere, Michigan was well done. The storyline keeps moving and keeps the viewer engaged in what will happen next. The characters are likeable and relatable inviting the viewer to create an emotional connection to them. I grew up in Escanaba and recognized some locations used to film in the Iron Mountain area. A crime thriller with some surprises at the end. Definitely would recommend for anyone from the U. P. or who enjoys supporting independent films.

Surprisingly Great!
pdubz-5555830 June 2021
Went into this movie with no knowledge of the storyline, budget or nothing. Within the first few minutes I realized this was a low budget film so I didn't expect a ton. As the story played out and we were introduced to more characters and their roles I became more interested. Something about this movie was fascinating, rather it be the idea of being on the run and starting over in a small town or rather it be the question of where it leads. I was overall super impressed and would recommend it if you take a liking to low budget, good storyline films. I would watch again and again. Which isn't something I say about many movies.

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this movie. Erin had the sexiest jiggly bits. The only thing I don't understand is why didn't they take her truck in the end?

Different and good.
jimvandemoter-5023620 March 2020
I was born and raised in Michigan. I'm a native Michiganian ( I don't like 'Michigander') My Dad was from Laurium and I did a lot of camping and skiing in the UP. There were a lot of places in Ironwood I recognized. Overall I found this to be an offbeat totally different kind of flick. All the characters were fun. The UP has it's own way of doing just about everything and it's captured pretty well here. If you're searching for a completely different kind of movie without all the typical Hollywood cliches check this one out. I was pleasantly surprised.

Riveting, exciting, nonstop!
hammondsollc14 January 2024
This isba great life lesson of things spiraling out of control... due to no fault of his own, the main character finds himselfninna dire situation of bad decisions making a situation worse. The main character is (minority decent ) is almost invisible... no spoiler...

As a transplant to Michigan (UP- actually in the town where much of this was filmed) I found it very entertaining! Non stop humor, and visual stimulating. I find it odd, however, that people from Michigan, particularly the UP, don't like it. This is most likely because they are viewed as charactcures... they really should view it as art, entertainment and a movie 🎬...
