Modern day noir story about Psychiatrist Eldon Chance, who's in a rut. He's middle-aged, his wife wants a divorce, which might put a strain on his relationship with his astute teenage daughter he deeply cares about, and he's getting tired of his professional work. Chance's natural talent for psychoanalysis allows him to easily assess everyone that wants his help but that doesn't mean he can actually cure them or even help them. Everything changes however, when he meets mysterious and attractive Jaclyn Blackstone, who turns out to have both dark secrets and big psychological as well as private problems. But her most immediate problem is her abusive ex-husband Raymond Blackstone, who also happens to be a corrupt cop with connections. Chance falls for Jaclyn and becomes obsessed with helping her but he quickly realizes that he's in over his head. Help eventually comes in the form of a hulking man called D. While clearly a bit unhinged, asocial and disturbed, D is also highly skilled, ...

The second TV show, after "House," in which Hugh Laurie stars as a troubled doctor whose last name is a common noun as well as the one-word title of the show. (Although in the first case the noun is a concrete object while in the other it is an abstract quality.) Also, Laurie uses an American accent in both series. See more »

Laurie at it again! And a great costarring cast.
25 November 2016 | by (Holzlager, NY) – See all my reviews

Hugh Laurie returns to a regular season of American TV again, as a diagnostician, but this time specifically as a forensic psychiatrist. Ironically -- or perhaps only because the character of Dr. Chance is a late middle aged American male, whose name parabolically happens to be "chance" -- he completely ignores his better judgment regarding counter-transference with a dangerous client (named, again parabolically, Jaclyn Blackstone), portrayed by predictably stunning Gretchen Moll. Meanwhile he hooks up by chance with a professional assassin/factotum genius, convincingly portrayed by Ethan Suplee. So far so good. I love this show.

But honestly, from the standpoint of writing, I really don't get Chance's existential meltdown. Where the hell was he coming from? What the hell does he think he's doing? His character is evidently too sick and deluded to be as functional as he appears to be, or so goes my clinical estimate. Or has he been a psychopath all along? Doubt it because his own wife does not seem afraid of or chillingly antipathetic him toward him. And he's not an addict like Dr. House was. That could explain some of his pathologies but apparently the man has no vices, other than a recently acquired taste for extremely dangerous, conspiratorial, amoral (not to mention unethical) conduct.

So barring psychopathy in Chance's case (but not in that of other major characters) what could possibly account for his emotional disassociation? At least that is a question that Laurie's relatively (compared to Greg House) understated portrayal of the lead's emotions begs, in my viewing. It needs resolution somehow for his character to be believable. A shrink's mind is rarely as simple as a mere (successful) killer's.

We'll see where the series goes but I suspect, after 7 episodes, we are headed for a season's-end cliffhanger of epic proportions. In fact, I don't know how the show could go much further than 9 based on the the way dramatic tension has built (and in spite of what I continue to notice, with disappointment, that amounts to an undercharacterization of the lead, at the writing level).

Anyway dramatic tension build up is a good thing that makes the series a must-watch for me, after seven episodes. So the series is so far a success but I'd like to see Laurie's acting ability made better use of to flesh out his character -- who is simply not an "action" figure (nor need he be, since we have Ethan Suplee), but rather, a thinking man's protagonist, as Laurie tends to play. That means his character needs better development by the producers and writers. At least House fans will be wanting it.
