A mostly low-key, but necessary episode
26 January 2017 | by (Blandon, PA) – See all my reviews

After last November's incredible finale, there was no way "We're Bad People" was gonna live up to any hype. And it didn't, but it didn't need to. "We're Bad People" is an episode that was incredibly necessary following the death of one of the Keating 5, and it works in that regard.

The episode has moments after every commercial break with these alternate universe sequences where Asher, Michaela, Annalise, Connor, and Laurel all interact with the now-dead Wes. I generally liked these, although Connor's rang a bit false for me considering what had occurred earlier.

Annalise's prison buddies were quite great, surprisingly, and I rather ended up liking those scenes. At first, I felt they were a little over the top, but after a bit more time with them, I've warmed up to them. I also liked the scenes between Annalise and Bonnie, as Bonnie desperately begs AK to help her, but AK doesn't really even care anymore.

The Keating 4 all have things to do this episode. Oliver reveals to Connor that he knows about the night of the bonfire, and the two argue with each other that Connor is gonna just keep screwing up their lives. While I am getting a little sick of them fighting all the time, I'm not mad yet because it feels like a natural progression. How would you feel if your boyfriend was part of a murder scheme?

The one thing that truly rang false about Michaela this episode, because everything else including her and Laurel's hospital bedside chat, was her basically berating Asher for punching Connor. Number one, Connor deserved it, and number two, Michaela has no room to talk, if I'm being quite honest.

Laurel doesn't do too much, but she still has unshakable belief in Annalise. So that's something. Speaking of Laurel, let's talk about Frank. For most of the episode, he's just the guy who goes and gets stuff done, until the ending. Now, I love HTGAWM for it's cliffhanger endings, but this one really didn't work for me. There's no way Frank killed Wes, and we all know it.

Overall, "We're Bad People" isn't the best HTGAWM has to offer, but it's better than the last two seasons' mid-season premieres, so it has that. I'm hoping that now that we have a baseline, these last five episodes ramp it up exponentially. I'm extremely excited for what's to come, and I have complete faith in Pete Nowalk. Bring it on.
