The Long Retreat
6 January 2017 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Warning do not read unless seen episode.

It's always one of the last things we want to happen but it's a reality; where the bad guys get the upper hand and the good guys actually lose. This was one of the darkest two part stories, much like with "The Empire Strikes Back" I'll admit it was really surreal seeing the Grimm squad on the losing end for once and forced into retreat but just like the Rebels they may'be running but not without a fight.

I really like the battles in this episode, really liked that fight in the corrupt present. I always think it's cool whenever there is a battle that takes place in a location of authority which is something I don't see often, and makes logical sense hitting your opponent hard at the home base. But like seeing some of the shootout with Hank and Wu, Trubel using her machete and stealth assassination tactics in the shootout, as well as Nick in his handcuffed state beating the crap and shooting at some of the corrupt cops. And of course we see the one on one with both Eve and the Zagabeast and it seems like Eve is winning but unfortunately the Zagabeast throws a curve ball at her when he directs broken glass toward her, Eve dodges but unfortunately failed to dodge them all, as one got through.

This of course is when the Jesus healing stick comes into play which we see heals Eve but also does something more it also heals her psyche. I really like this camera shot when we see after the episode stops, the wig then falls out and we see her natural hair; that's when you know Julliete is back. I personally was a little happy about this because I always did like Julliete, I was never really a fan of the Eve persona Eve was never really a character more like a caricature. Seeing Julliete actually talk normally to Nick I thought was touching. However seeing this really makes me wonder what this will do with his current relationship with Adline, oh what a web we weave.

On a side note despite the position Adline is put in, she finds a way to help Nick and the Grimm squad by having her daughter warn them which of course gives them the time to evacuate. I thought that was a bit touching showing that she does truly care about Nick and even the Grimm squad because they've given her something she's never really had a family.

And of course we see the Grimm squad going into retreat using the tunnels which is cool because that's something I've been waiting for. The tunnels have been one of the revolving mysteries in the show, I personally think may'be these tunnels where built by Vessen which is part of the reason plans for the tunnels couldn't be found. May'be back then they used them to hide and escape from some sort of shadow war going on for the Vessen in the 1920s, I don't know we'll have to wait and see.

There was a really touching moment when Roselee gives Monroe the news about the baby. And due to the fact that this child will be a half breed just all the more reason why the Grimm squad must win this war in the days to come. Because Black Claws ideals are corrupt and fascist, where they'll destroy anyone that doesn't fall into any of their ideals they hold or just anything different, which means the child's life is at stake.

Really liked that final battle at the end which is probably one of my favorite battles in the show, it kinda reminds me a little of the apartment battle in the film "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (90's film). What I love about battles like that are that it takes place in confined space, this works to Nick's advantage because Black Claw is on his turf now; but also just the simple premise of one against all. It was awesome seeing Nick just give it his all as he is practically surrounded left and right by Black Claw but Nick never lets up. We of course seeing him shoot it out, but then it gets down to fist a cuffs from unarmed combat seeing Nick break a neck or too to really like seeing him use the Axe just hacking and slashing at any blowholes in his way.

Even liked seeing him do away with some of the corrupt blowhole cops that arrested him, there is one good kill when Nick throws a knife at one guy's eye, yeah Bullseye mother .... Then we see there was one moment which was almost heart sinking when we see Nick getting nailed by one of the corrupt cops, but as I said almost if you remember the Jesus stick, we then see Nick healed, bounce back and nail the guy.

We then see the final minutes where Nick is about to be done away by the Zagabeast, though Nick might not have much to worry about since he still has the stick with him. But then the Zagabeast gets nailed by Diana, which to me was sweet relief that guy was a real d... so he had it coming. But then we see in the final moment it comes down to a face off between Renard and Nick. Who will win and will the Grimm squad be able to turn the tide of the war? Well just have to wait and see in the final chapter.
