- Fed up with the lack of critical appreciation despite being a successful writer, Abhimanyu Roy (Ayushmann Khurrana) returns to his roots in Kolkata to write more meaningful literature and decides on an old-fashioned love story - which was now, 3 years in the making. This writer's block is called Bindu (Parineeti Chopra). How do you contain this unpredictable, crazy, restless, larger than life, live wire in the pages of a book? So where should he begin? Where should he end? But when Abhi stumbles across an old audio cassette of their favorite playlist, it sends Abhi down memory lane - and as he waltzes in and out of his past and present through the songs in the mixed tape, he finally faces reality and reconnects with his roots, with his family and his novel starts writing itself. Of course, life in its usual scheming manner surprises him yet again and changes the ending of his book and his life, as he once again finds himself being pulled back into the center of that crazy little thing called love. He realizes, that love, is neither time- nor place-dependent. - All we need is the right person next to us and of course the right soundtrack.—Official source

Turns out Bindu used to live in the Bangalore next to Abhi's, with her parents in Kolkata. She wanted to be a singer. Abhi and Bindu were childhood friends and grew up together. Abhi was completely infatuated with Bindu. They spend their childhood doing random pranks on everyone around them. Slowly they start dating other people on their own. Life takes a tragic turn when Bindu's mother dies in a car accident. She blames her dad and runs away from home to Australia to her Mausi. Abhi goes to Mumbai and becomes a banker.
He gets news that Bindu has come back to Kolkata for her wedding, but true to form Bindu runs out on her engagement itself. Bindu and Abhi remain in touch through the period. Abhi runs into Bindu on a vacation in Goa and finds that she is also in Mumbai, pursuing her dream to be a singer. She is also engaged.
They meet up in Mumbai. Abhi puts his own dating life on hold, to help Bindu when she goes through depression when her fiance runs out on her. Abhi spends a lot of time with Bindu and eventually realizes that he loves her. He declares his love in a proposal, which she accepts. All is good, Bindu gets an offer to work on a solo album, which is released. But the album is a commercial dud. Bindu again goes into depression. With the blessing of his family and Bindu's dad, Abhi proposes to Bindu and she rejects it. She says that she cant be excited about the "normal" life that Abhi aspires to. Abhi decides to make drastic changes to his own life. He quits his job at the bank & decides to become a writer. His publisher introduces him to the idea of horror based soft porn. They day his first book publishes, Bindu calls him from an unknown number. She speaks softly and tells that she is getting married soon.
Back in the present day, he finds that Bindu's dad is selling his bungalow. Abhi visits Bindu's room one last time and finds a little girl sitting in the exact same place where he met Bindu for the first time. Turns out she is Bindu's daughter. Abhi gives his now complete novel to Bindu to read. In its ending, he has written that Abhi had the courage to fight for Bindu and she came back and kissed him and they lived together thereafter. Bindu tells Abhi that this is his tale and its his right to write it the way he wants it. She goes on with her life, but both share a few good last moments together.
