The project was originally conceived as a film reboot of the film franchise that started with The Exorcist (1973) until the idea was reworked as a television series sequel instead.
Though publicized as a reboot of the original movie, it can in fact be considered a sequel, as evidenced by the photo of the infamous stairs and a newspaper article recounting some of the events from the first film.
The series was filmed in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois.
Even though Hannah Kasulka plays the youngest member of the Rance family, she is in fact one year older than Brianne Howey, who portrays the eldest sister.

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

Angela Rance, Geena Davis' character, is an anagram for 'A clean Regan'. Regan MacNeil was the possessed girl in the 1973 original movie.
In the end of the 5th episode when Angela is talking to Father Tomas about imaginary friends, it is revealed that Angela Rance is in fact Regan MacNeill. At that exact moment her mother, Chris MacNeil comes to visit, this pays homage to the original 1973 movie, making the series a sequel TV series.
Despite playing mother and daughter Sharon Gless is only 12 and a half years older than Geena Davis.
