- Satoru follows the only clue left behind by his mother , while it does prove useful Satoru struggles to stay one step ahead of the police.
- Airi explains in better detail why she feels the need to believe the best about people. This is a flashback intercut with Airi's current predicament in the burning home. Satoru watches from outside as smoke and flames billow from the house. Upon hearing that Airi is still inside he snatches a woman's handkerchief and runs inside. He is able to quickly find her but is too weak to effectively rescue her. She regains consciousness for a moment to slip her cellphone into Satoru's pocket, this way the police won't have that piece of evidence implicating him in the fire. The manger shows up just in time to help them down the stairs but not before making a snarky comment about manga artists. Once down the stairs the manger urges Satoru to keep Airi out of his mess and gives him the opportunity to escape in return for getting credit for the rescue. Satoru grimaces but takes the deal.
Resting in a parking lot Satoru guesses that the killer had set the fire also. he looks through Airi's phone and sees the text from his mother's phone. Figuring the killer may be closer than he thinks Satoru sets off again into the night.
A man in the Columbus records building gets a phone call from someone claiming to be Satoru Fujinuma. The man won't say his name because he believes the person may have killed Sachiko Fujinuma. However, he agrees to meet with person and at the meeting we see it truly is Satoru who placed the call. The man's name is Sawada and he is a former employee of TV Ishikari. Sawada expresses relief that Satoru is in fact who he says he is. Satoru seems to remember seeing Sawada speaking to his mother a long time ago. Sawada promises Satoru that he's told no one about their meeting and that he also didn't kill Sachiko. Satoru wonders if Sawada suspects him but Sawada outright denies doing so, he is convinced that Sachiko would not raise a son who would murder her.
Now that they both trust each other Sawada takes Satoru to his house. Satoru believes that his clumsiness in the situation makes him responsible for the harm that has come to his mother and Airi. Sawada is able to make him feel better by quoting something Sachiko used to say. Sawada reveals that he spoke to Sachiko the day she died and planned to meet with her to discuss the case. He realizes all too late he should have asked her for the information she had as it has now died with her. Sawada illustrates the timeline of Kayo Hinazuki's murder painting Yuuki as the murderer. Satoru is outraged at hearing this as he knows Yuuki would never do such a thing. Sawada tells him of another set of abductions in the next town over where the suspect like Yuuki claims to be innocent. He paints Satoru a mental picture of the perfect criminal who diverts the investigation away from himself by manipulating the crime scenes and framing an innocent person.
In the hospital Airi sneaks out of her room and listens to the detectives gossip about her and Satoru. Her Aunt and Uncle believe she was targeted by Satoru and not his accomplice which only make her feel guilty. While reading the newspaper in the hospital gift shop Airi is approached by someone we can't see.
Back at Sawada's house Satoru turns over Airi's phone explaining that the killer sent a text to Airi from his mother's phone. Satoru realizes that Airi must have seen the killer when he was preparing to murder Sachiko and thusly had to be taken out. Sawada also believes he must be someone with enough authority to look at the Oasis pizza shop schedule. Believing this is a strong enough lead to go on Sawada goes to he hospital to see Airi, he allows Satoru the chance to reads his personal report on the murders 18 years ago. While Sawada believes Hiromi was killed after being mistaken for a girl Satoru knows that Hiromi was killed to trick the police into thinking the killer did not know Hiromi personally. Checking the old suspect list that was created before Hiromi's death Satoru find the name he was looking for.
At the hospital sawada craftily sneaks into Airi's room only to find her mother has taken her place. We see in a flashback that Airi explains to her mother that Satoru is innocent and her mother gives her blessing for Airi to go help him. Back at Sawada's place Satoru gets a call on Airi's phone. It is Airi and despite his trepidation the two plan to meet at the secret hideout under the bridge.
Satoru arrives at the park and helps two young boys modify their paper airplane but is run off by two protective mothers. Satoru waits a long time under the bridge but Airi finally shows up. true to old form Satoru admits out loud that he is ashamed for thinking it may be a police trap. Airi only finds this funny and tells him he is right for being suspicious. Airi is mistrustful of a guy named Nishizono who she has seen around the shop a few times. She has him identified at a city councilor so he would also have access to their schedule. Satoru can't make a connection as there is no Nishizono on the suspect list. Frustrated at the dead end Satoru begins to stress out. He tells Airi the idea for a story he has about a grim reaper who makes a mistake and ruins things even more for everyone involved when he tries to fix it. The salt in the wound is the airplane he helped the kids with goes floating up the river as it has now flown out of the children's reach due to his interference. Airi calls him stupid and tells him he hasn't gotten her hurt and the misfortune he has caused is only what he can see from his perspective not the only result. Airi tells him to have more faith in himself and he makes her blush by telling her he is glad that they met. The moment is cut short as the police arrive to arrest Satoru. Airi tries to protect him but is cast aside easily by a detective. Satoru admits that he always knew his relationship with Airi was to be doomed by arrest or revival. He decides to return the favor she did by encouraging him and tells her because she believed in him he will be able to carry on. While being strode away to the police car Satoru gets eyes on his mother's killer standing nearby. A Man who resembles his grade school teacher only with red eyes.
