"Wish Upon" is a new horror film being released the same weekend as the new Planet of The Apes, and whoever thought that was a good idea should be fired. Basically this film focuses on a high school teen named Clare (Joey King), who is bullied and picked on who happens to come across this this wish box that grants her seven wishes and after each wish, someone ends up dead.
PG-13 horror movies tend to go in a bad direction for me. I did enjoy last year's "Lights Out" and the Insidious Series as well, but other than that, PG-13 horror movies usually aren't that great. This one is really no different.
The characters in this movie are weak as hell. Each of them has little to no development and they all make stupid decisions, only to reverse those decisions a split second later to make even dumber decisions. These characters are not smart, they're not interesting, they're not relatable.
This movie sets up an antagonist, but does nothing with it. It gives you backstory as to where this wish box came from, but ends up doing nothing with it. The antagonist is not here in this movie. usually horror movies at least have a ghost, apparition or something the protagonist has to deal with at the end. This movie doesn't even have that. Its sets it up and forgets about it about halfway through.
This is ultimately a high school teen drama with horror elements that thinks it's a horror movie with high school teen drama elements. Everything was boring in this movie, and that is not how high school works. I've been out of high school for five years now, and suffered through bullying and being picked on throughout high school, and I can tell you from first hand experience that they portray bullying wrong in this film. That is not bullying. That's just being an idiot.
This movie isn't scary. Like many other horror movies, it relies solely on jump scares and nothing else. Even the disturbing imagery in this movie isn't disturbing. It is easily the most predictable horror movie I have ever seen.
The only thing I can about this film positively is that it is a good idea. But it is executed in a way that is so poorly done and poorly written, that even the deaths after awhile became dull and hilarious.
I am going to give "Wish Upon" a D-.
There are some things I may have missed in this review, but you can check out my review here on YouTube for further proof as to why you shouldn't see this movie.
