Subhash K Jha Reviews Saala Khadoos: “Madhavan Towers Over A Good Film”

8 February 2016 5:13 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

There aren’t too many competent sports films in our country, and certainly not too many that can claim to penetrate the hearts and minds of the sports and the sportsperson. Shimit Amin’s Chak De, in spite of its rabid rabble-rousing nationalism, managed to give us a clear and coherent portrait of the sport and the player…

Director Sudha Kongara Prasad gives us an unusual film where the stereotypical character of the  cantankerous boxer meets his match when he picks up a foul-mouthed uncouth boxer for training into championship.

There is nothing in the plot to suggest even a whiff of the unexpected. If you’ve seen the gruff and growling Clint Eastwood barking pugilistically at his protégée Hillary Swank in Million Dollar Baby you would know where the inspiration for Sudha Kongara Prasad’s film comes from… Or for that matter, the under-developed relationship between boxing coach Sunil Thapa »

Box Office – Airlift has a bountiful second weekend, crosses 100 crore mark

1 February 2016 1:33 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Akshay Kumar’s Airlift was clearly the choice of audience over the weekend gone by. Even in its second weekend, it did better than the new releases (Mastizaade, Saala Khadoos) which tells the tale. After holding quite well on Friday, it started escalating on Saturday and Sunday, hence resulting in a bountiful weekend of 19 crore*. As a result, the film now currently stands at 102.5 crore*.

With this, the film has now crossed the 100 crore mark in 10 days flat, an achievement by all means, especially considering the fact that this was a niche drama in the offering with offbeat cinema meeting commercial parameters. Director Raja Menon is now the newest entrant into the 100 crore club and he has managed that with a film which would gain him a lot of respect as well as commercial viability.

Star presence of Akshay Kumar has further helped the film reach out to a larger section of the audience. »

Saala Khadoos Movie Review

29 January 2016 12:10 AM, PST | indicine | See recent indicine news »

R Madhavan has unwittingly been a part of some of the biggest Blockbusters of Bollywood (Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots, Tanu Weds Manu series) but unfortunately he never seems to get the credit he deserves. None of those films would be such big hits without Madhavan’s characters. He is trying to set things straight with Saala Khadoos, where he gets main billing. Read More »

24 January 2016 7:30 PM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

New year, new movies, new trends, new expectations. 2015 saw us cry, laugh, dance and snooze like any other but we tried new things, we pushed our boundaries and we set new goals. 2016 in B-town is set to explode on the silver screen with bigger and hopefully better entertainment. So without further ado, Bollyspice brings you the most anticipated films of 2016.

1.) Saala Khadoos

Anyone on social media that follows Madhavan would be witness to the actor and his transformation. The actor has posted many pictures of his life but none received quite the surprise response as pictures of him as he was preparing for this film. Someone regarded as capable but not quite a mainstream actor, Madhavan films have always met with intrigue when he is the protagonist. Saala Khadoos brings out the angry young man that Madhavan has rarely shown in Hindi cinema. After back-to-back wins with Tanu Weds Manu, »

Preview of R. Madhavan’s Saala Khadoos

9 January 2016 7:36 PM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Set to release on January 29th, the Rajukumar Hirani produced Saala Khadoos (Irudhi Suttru in Tamil) stars R. Madhavan.

Saala Khadoos tells the tale of Adi Tomar who had a dream to win the boxing gold for India. Instead he languished in a nightmare for a decade as his gloves were spiked during an all-important match, blinding him in the arena and handing the match to his undeserving opponent—a mediocre boxer but a political powerhouse. The culprit was his own coach, Dev Khatri. Shattered by his loss, and disillusioned by the state of Indian boxing, Adi turned to a life of cynical self-destruction of booze, brothels and bar-fights. Loyal friends somehow bring him back to boxing as the coach of the lowly rated Indian women’s boxing team. His outspoken honesty sends jitters through his old adversaries, and he is soon transferred to Chennai—the Siberia of Indian boxing. »
