What a load of crap. Oh my. Just a horrible attempt at a movie. Worst I've seen in a long while. Avoid this like the plague.... These women just whine and mope around the entire movie. They are so weak , it makes me sick. A real woman is strong.

A post-apocalyptic meditation on sanity in the absence of hope

If you want an action-packed war movie, this is not it. Hymns is a thoughtful psychodrama about war and love. Everything, from the wandering ambient soundtrack to the highly emotive camera work is carefully constructed to put you in a strange emotional place. The setting of the film adds further tension by being timeless and familiar. There are no jump scares, no weapons, and no villains, leaving the conflict to reside solely within characters. It takes time to unravel and it's not fully linear so don't bother with this film if you are in a rush or you think you know what you want out of it; but if you are open to seeing where it takes you, it's certainly worth taking the ride.

Good story, a couple downsides

Warning: Spoilers
The overall story was very interesting. Separation from a loved one during war time (or if they're in a hot zone) can mess those left behind mentally. You do feel like you're losing it. You can definitely see that with Ingrid. The actress portrays her downward spiral very well.

I liked Ingrid's side of the narrative with the letters. They were sweet and you could feel her pain. Didn't care for the Mary character/actress. She was just too off. Irene was good. I'm glad she resisted Ingrid's advances. Got me in my feels when she described her nightmares. I also liked how she kinda held the three of them together.

Worst part of the movie was Ellis. He was ok in the flashback scenes (no talking). But whenever he talked on camera I just didn't feel it. It was like he was trying to make every line this profound statement. Not sure if that's the fault of writing, direction, or the actor. Maybe all 3. I feel horrible saying that about an actor.

Overall a good movie. Some weird scenes but that's what you get in a lot of films like tbis. Just roll with it.

Though you may want to skip it like someone else said if you're looking for a faced paced action movie.
