Two of the sequences were inspired by true events. When co-writer/producer and director, Tom Greene was a child he lived right behind the Van Nuys Drive-In, and his parents, who were from New York, had heard that you could go to the drive-in wearing your pajamas. So his entire family went in PJ's, much to their embarrassment at the Drive-In refreshment stand during intermission. The "Runamuk" sequence was shot at the same Drive-In, not long before it was torn down. And as in the sequence, they did indeed forget where their car was when the lights went down for the second feature. The Drive-In actually put on the marquee: "Matinee Today - Half Price". Amazingly, during the shooting of that sequence, cars started to line up outside the entrance to get in.
An episodic comedy created by Tom Greene and Jonathan Torp. The film, which made use of extensive high-quality production values, including extensive locations, long complex Steadicam takes, helicopter shots, special graphic effects from several Disney animators and original music utilizing a full studio orchestra. Originally made for legendary producer and studio Executive Herb Solow ,who believed "Runamuk" could be America's answer to "Monty Python's Flying Circus". The opening "Sound of Music" parody has become a cult classic and a favorite to such comic geniuses as Jerry Zucker..
The opening "Sound of Music" parody was also partially inspired by Greene's initial interview with Director Robert Wise when he applied for the position of Director of Project Development for Wise's production company. At the end of the interview, Wise asked him why he should hire him, and Greene responded: "Because I have never seen The Sound of Music" and am very proud of that!" Wise hired him on the spot. The Runamuk Company offices were at the Sunset-Gower Studios in Hollywood, and at the time Robert Wise has office upstairs. When "Runamuk" was complete, Greene, and co-writer/producer and actor Jonathan Torp took the film up to Wise and screened it for him, terrified about his reaction. He absolutely loved it and asked for a copy.
