Pretty Numbing

This week's episode was very heavy on the deus ex machina ... in a reasonably literal sense.

How events panned out force Jesse's internalisation of the pressures on him to grow which means that the impact of what's happening here are really hitting home.

This said, it's a bit of an empty feeling I got from the episode overall. Perhaps my least favourite (yet still beautiful) of the season thus far. I think it starts out fantastically, and I don't mean the action, either. Some of the little bits from W. Earl Brown are so perfect that everyone else blends in to the background apart from Haley, who basically owns the episode.

Haley's performances throughout have been perhaps the most embodying (alon.... ) ... actually, no ... I can't pick him out. The actors all ... to a tee ... have embodied the characters they've been written so strongly it's ridiculous. That's no different here, the focus is just on Haley. From watching the first 'talking preacher' I see that they had a lot of rehearsal before hand, this has clearly really helped them hone character ... and in some instances change it a little to suit how they're feeling it.

As I say, though, for whatever reason I'm a little numb to this particular episode, and I don't know why. Perhaps it was the meat in the sandwich, because it begins and ends fantastically. Also that end ... I'm really hoping that has something to do with Arseface, however it's so unclear, and so joyfully abstract that who even knows.

End of viewing for this viewer

Warning: Spoilers
Stuck with this show, even as it kept dragging more each episode, but finally the end comes with a just awful kick in the gut-really, a dog getting killed like that. Is there not enough misery and pain the writers have to just push more and more? Arghh. I'm through. No more viewing this and not an ounce of interest. Great job creators. I was so excited to see this was coming on and now so disgusted with what it became. Ugh. The IMDb says I have to have 10 lines of text so I guess I will just need to keep saying how disgusted this show has become to me. Pilot was great and then it just became a chore to watch but this episode was the proverbial straw that snapped this camel's back. Ugh again.

Completely Wrong

Director Kate Dennis doesn't get Preacher. Please don't let her direct another. It may be based on a comic book, but that doesn't mean you throw away all suspension of disbelief and empathy for the characters. This HORRIBLY DIRECTED EPISODE includes multiple off camera fights which defy logic or sense, offensively uncharacteristic behavior from the "protagonists" and horribly stilted, sit-com level acting. It puts a bad taste in your mouth for continued viewing, and I read the comics and love the story. I hope they learn from this foul entry in the series and course correct. Where is the story I read? Why not use it as your basis? NONE OF THIS IS IN THE GRAPHIC NOVELS. Get back to the roots.

Completely wrong

Warning: Spoilers
This might be the last episode I will watch of this show. So far there have been things I did not like, but in general it was rather entertaining to watch, but this episode is unbearable and it looks like many people share my doubts. It cannot be a good episode that starts with a cow being killed (end even worse: the killing is completely pointless) and ends with a dog being killed (and nothing good in between, like Eugene still in hell etc.). This is the reason, this world is a living hell and chaos and many people correctly quote that hell is other people (or just people in general/all of them) - men who have no respect for animals/the lives and feelings and well-being/pain of other species, are in no position to call and consider themselves the superior kind and allow themselves to kill other species. To quote a man who does understand a bit: Gandhi said: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Looks like mankind is rotten. And so is God, which is as I have understood the message of the original story/the comic Preacher is based upon, but this valid, true message is brushed down or entirely left out of the show - there is gore and torture of innocent creatures, but the makers shy away from telling relevant critical questions about God? He is laughing his ass off about us dumb, cowardly, misled idiots. And Preacher with his arrogance of being the one able to use Genesis - isn't arrogance/pride a deadly sin? But God doesn't care anyway, he is the biggest killer and sinner and liar of all and he made men just like him/in his image and he enjoys people hurting other beings - so there you have it and I'm off, this show is disgusting but chickens out when it comes to the core questions - not well done at all. I vote for what is good, therefore I cannot root for God, this is what should be made clear.
