Mo lun: Chinese SAW?
Platypuschow17 January 2019
The Precipice Game falls under a horror sub-genre that I like, namely people being thrown into a dangerous situation such as a game. Other movies that tick this box would be the likes of SAW (2004), Circle (2015) and The Human Race (2013).

It's not that simple however here and this Chinese made horror is not what it first appears to be. I do however mean that in a good way, mostly.

It tells the story of 6 people who get onto a cruise liner to participate in a treasure hunt with a million prize! The whole thing turns sour though after they witness and death and find themselves fighting for their lives.

If you can get past the awful dub the Precipice Game is actually watchable stuff. Sure it takes some influence from other films (Okay a LOT of influence) but it has it's own identity.

When the ending is delivered however I can imagine viewers being very split on whether it makes or breaks the film. For me I liked it, but it couldn't make up for the movies flaws.

In places it looks very cheap, the handling of the concept could have been better and the cast? I'm not convinced. However my head is still spinning regarding their ages, the main ones all look in their early 20's but are in fact 40+. Whatever they're putting in the water in China these days, I want some.

Watchable stuff but few surprises.

The Good:

Interesting concept

Great setting

The Bad:

Concept isn't utilized very well

Awful dub

Too familiar Chinese horror/thriller
Leofwine_draca6 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
THE PRECIPICE GAME is a densely plotted Chinese horror/thriller about a group of contestants who board a ship in order to play a deadly game. They're forced to endure various ordeals and end up being killed off one by one as they attempt to make sense of their situation. This low budget film has the requisite melodrama, CGI effects, and perilous situations, and feels very much like a concoction of former Hollywood movies such as TRIANGLE, the SAW franchise, you name it. There's a great deal of plot to get through here which drives the narrative forward and stops things becoming boring, but at the same time absolutely nothing stands out. Peter Ho (SWORD MASTER) is the emo hero of the piece.

Solid 6 Stars From Me
Foutainoflife7 January 2020
Against her mother's opinion of her boyfriend, a couple decide to try to win a game offering $1 million dollars as a prize. The game takes place on a cruise ship but once the game starts it turns into a fight to stay alive.

I thought this was decent enough. it was a bit slow to get started but it became far more interesting once it moved along. The acting is decent, set is decent and the story, while a bit predictable, is keeps you interested.

I ended up liking it and would probably suggest it to a friend for a night on the couch.

Waterlogged

Warning: Spoilers
It seems that the Chinese filmmakers behind this movie were greatly influenced by the Hollywood "Saw" film series, and the Michael Douglas movie "The Game". Kind of a strange combination, but I guess it could have worked under more capable hands. With that statement, you've probably guessed that this movie doesn't work very well, and you would be right. For starters, it's painfully clear that the filmmakers didn't exactly have a lavish budget. Every production value, from the cheap cinematography to the flimsy sets, makes the movie look and feel real tacky. It also probably explains why the camera is constantly jammed in close to the actors, giving the movie a real claustrophobic feeling. And that's about the only feeling the direction manages to generate, because there is no feeling of horror, tension or mystery at all. Most of the movie is really boring, except maybe for the so-called twist at the end, which is even sillier and less believable than the twist in "The Game". There are a lot better thrillers - Chinese or not- out there, so there's no reason why you should waste your time with this one.

i don't even know if its worth it

Warning: Spoilers
this is my first time write a review, since there are no review at all, i hope this help. the story is about a girl who had a bad relationship with her mother, because the mother didn't approve her bf. of course she didn't listen to her mother and went to present trip with her bf in a treasure hunt ship cruise.

MY OPINION (contains SPOILER) at first i thought wow very fast moving movie, its kind of cliché slasher movie but still interesting. all the characters is very lame tho, like you can find it in every psycho movies. and peter ho (he is hot) had this ugliest awkward goatee that distract me. and the worst is the end, this may be the first time for me to hate a twist in a movie. (BIG SPOILER) how come the mother is the brain just to test her bf!! wow she almost lost her life! i thought she would be super mad to her mother and her bf( because her bf turnout out to chose his life (an a*s but make sense)), but she understood her mom all of sudden... and the twin twist, i understand it means peter ho didn't really know about this plans still unnecessary... ggaahh..

well its OK-ish as long as you turn a blind eye for the ending.. but if i know the spoiler from the start i might skip it, and watch it when i really don't have any better movies to watch.

Memorable boat ride
kosmasp17 February 2018
I know that there will be a lot of comparisons to a famous horror/thriller analogy from people watching this, due to the mechanisms/traps on the boat. But once you've watched it, you may find another maybe even more suitable comparison (movie-wise that is). But since I don't want to spoil the experience I'll leave it at that .. I am going to mention that the end will most likely break the movie as a whole for most people.

It is really something that shouldn't have happened, but there are some notions of it throughout. Still the movie has some nice effects overall and it has the tension it needs to keeps you on the edge of your seat. You can't be squeamish about violence of course, but there is no nudity. Characters are paper thin, but they mostly are in thrillers like this

We're all going to die
nogodnomasters7 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Chen Chen and her boyfriend win a cruise and a chance at a treasure hunt. Mom, a successful business woman, does not approve of her boyfriend. The contestants are trapped on a ship filled with booby traps and clues....and a person must die at each level.

The film had that Saw/Cube feel. The Chinese also provided some flirty, leggy eye-candy. The film had subtitles, and like a Scooby-doo episode when the game is over, you already knew from the one clue what was going on.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity. Not even close.
