Just a bit above the boredom
12 August 2016 | by (India) – See all my reviews

Director's approach towards this subject is unbalanced. He prefers to highlight comedy in serious court room drama scenes, which minimize the few good points in argument. Makers underline the place of applause by constantly showing, clapping persons sitting in court room when you wonder, was it worth clapping? It was just like few comedy shows who dictate audience where to laugh by slapping back ground sound of laughter. Even judge takes typical tension building pause to give the verdict!? Director taking style is old too. Showing slow moving ceiling fan as metaphor of tension inside character of scene is stale but this is in abundant here, especially in court room scenes. Yes, court rooms do have such type of fan but rather than avoiding such old metaphor they try to highlight it. This story had its moments but gets ruined due to weird way of inducing comedy in emotional and dramatic scenes too. Girl showing placard of 'Marry me Rustom' even being aware that he loves his wife too much in pre climax!? It all happens when you don't know how to handle the subject. A smart comedy scene of a person selling victim's towel by describing its feature that it remains tied even on dead body is inserted between dramatic court montages, making it ineffective while child vendor selling news paper serves its purpose of humor due to its good placing. Screenplay doesn't offer anything new too. For flirting, gifting necklace and sprain in girl's leg, so person can lift her are too much. Husband wife romance or chemistry is not well established so they look separate even after wife shedding tears. Navy officers send some persons to search a document but that persons were more interested of throwing paper rather than looking into it, foolish way of highlighting drama. All this finished its real look even great work done by production designer Priya Suhas, to give a real feel. Film is slow in first half and has its good witty court room scenes in second but unnecessarily comedy takes over. When you know that what has happened then long scenes to show that fact is very boring. Background score is notably loud, repetitive and irritating. Performance wise Akshay Kumar is very good. Ileana D'cruz is good in emotional scenes. Kumud Mishra as news paper owner Billimoria is perfect. His Parsi accent, way of walking and expressions are fantastic. Pawan Malhotra as investigating inspector and Sachin Khedekar as lawyer are fine. Arjan Bajwa as Vikram Makhija and Esha Gupta as Preeti Makhija are just OK.
