Halfway there, living on a prayer (literally)...

Warning: Spoilers
This mess of a flick was at best only halfway interesting. Every other ten minutes or so, I'd be somewhat riveted by the storyline, thinking I was watching a dark, almost Polanski-esque fable, but suddenly I'd be in the midst of a budding love story. The few odd, poorly delivered, and out of place attempts at comedic relief were nothing but fluff, as well. Thematically, this was like witnessing an interstate pile-up. Speaking of violence, SPOILER ALERT: I saw more menstrual blood in this film than I have in my entire life.

Still, and overall, it's easy enough to follow the story and to realize what's happening, but, and this is a huge BUT, if the screenwriter and director had just stuck with one film genre, this would've been a much better film, regardless of the genre chosen. Instead, we're left with a melodramatic art house LGBT horror period (no pun intended) piece. Yuck. 5/10

Dark psychological drama
loveskulls22 April 2019
I don't think it is quite appropriate to label this as horror and not just because it doesn't follow the whole jump-scare-gore template. However, it is a well-made, skillfully acted and starkly beautiful film and I was enraptured from the beginning. The major fault lies in this: there is a fine line between enigmatic and confusing; unfortunately, director Elizabeth Schuch occasionally veers across that line. I would've given this at least another star had I not felt vaguely dissatisfied at the end.

Still, it is a beautiful, thoughtful film and I'm very glad to have watched it. I think if it were reclassified, a more suited audience would better appreciate it. Look forward to Schuch's next offering.

Subtle darkness

A psychological journey in a troubled girl's mind with the gorgeous setting of a religious house. If you want jumpy horror shots this isn't for you, but if you like a subtle dark tale that takes you along with it then Birdie is a great choice.
