Passable fare, but easily forgettable
jdollak10 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I watched about 2/3rds of this movie in the first sitting. It was okay. Not especially funny, but somehow engaging enough to keep me from being bored. I realized about a month later that I hadn't finished the movie, and didn't know if it was still up on Netflix. Of course, it was, and I finished watching it.

There are a few charming moments, but nothing that approaches memorable. There's a lot of humor that could be mined from people who buy into ghost hunting shows. Those ideas are in this movie, but it seemed like it lost focus of the funniest aspect of the premise, and instead went with some broad, predictable gags for the characters.

The plot involves the group deciding to shoot an audition episode of a ghost hunting show. They go to a "haunted" barn. After poking around, they stumble on a larger, non-supernatural story.

This is a decent development, but for the budget that the movie seemed to have, the writing is much more dull, and no real risks are taken.

On the weak side.
subxerogravity16 August 2016
Jon Header plays a guy boohooing over the fact that he owns a copy shop(Keyword owns, don't care how boring it is to own a copy shop) Then suddenly, an old man comes into the shop rambling about something but the only thing this guy picks up is that his house is haunted. Now he recruits his friends to check it out so he can make an audition tape to become a new cast member of the TV show Ghost Hunter.

It's an ensemble cast of once well known up and coming actors playing the worse group of underachievers America has to offer, going for the goal of the most superficial achievement America has to offer, a group of stoner like white boys trying to be on a reality show.

Maybe it would have been far funnier if the white boys were actually stoners, but this movie is just super corny. Jon Heder is corny, Justin long is really corny. The only one who really made me laugh was the guy who played Zak who gave me one big laugh, out of a movie good for only three big laughs.

Ghost Team did have a plot twist that was worthy of one of those three big laughs too, but the movie altogether is not funny and it quickly makes you loose interest because of how unfunny it is from the start.

One huge laugh at the end but the movie only gave me three when it should have given me more.

Misleading title, this film was certainly a buster. Better to call this film "Team".
bsw0315 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Referring to this as a Scooby Doo wanna be is insulting to Scooby Doo...but very correct in what played out honestly.

Better to call this Scooby Doo wanna-be's and the Mystery of the Noises at the Farm. That would have been a better and more honest title and that would have moderated my expectation more.

Great to see Amy Sedaris still working and I wonder if the film being local to New York had anything to do with that. The local outdoor traveling scenes were gorgeous. It was good to see Paul D from Broad City fame in the film also but I'm not into awkward humor or movies that deliver a different movie than indicated.

I was expecting a ghost/funny/horror film from the title and the bait was switched. Resulting in a movie I cared little about. Character development? Romantic tension? Potential abuse of power to curry romantic interest? Bullying portrayed as comedy? Questionable end story conclusions about decisions character made to move this story forward? This movie had those issues, tensions, and plotholes and after the reveal I could care less what happened to the team outside of not wanting to see them expire. And Sedaris's schtick that saves the day? Potentially original in some sense but very underwhelming and uninspired as it was a repeat ploy. And the character reveals outside of the new potential police officer elicited a very "Meh" reaction from me. If you are into a human relations movie then have at it as this is about the formation of a team. It you are looking for anything related to Ghost pass this by.

That team can form for more zany adventures on other weekends, I'll skip any more adventures.

I wrote and earlier review that did not get posted so posting this again.

Ghost Team: Alarmingly poor
Platypuschow1 May 2019
Not to be confused with the superior Ghost Team One (2013) this is a "Ghost" themed comedy, or is it?

Starring a bunch of actors on the downswing of their careers including Jon "Napoleon Dynamite" Heder, Justin "Better than being in something like this" Long, David "The Santa Claus" Krumholtz and Melonie Diaz it's quite alarmingly poor.

It tells the story of a man bored with his mundane life who dreams of being a professional ghost hunter. When an opportunity to join the premier ghost hunter show presents itself he forms a team to capture footage to prove himself.

So it's a comedy, the trouble is I don't think anyone told the writer. I think I could probably count half a dozen jokes in the 90 minute runtime, but on the flipside it isn't serious enough to be a straight movie. For this reason the tone is way off, and the cast don't do it any favors especially Heder who I've never seen the appeal of.

Want a comedy "Ghost Team" movie, watch Ghost Team One (2013). This is simply not a comedy.

The Good:

Justin Long

The Bad:

Not even remotely funny

Bland cast

A film about nothing
pizzadudes17 December 2019
It's so bad I couldn't watch it all. Even having it on in the background was annoying. Feel a bit guilty even giving it a 2 but I guess they put some effort into making it. That's all I got. Mince.

Do not bother
JustBe33315 April 2019
I tried to watch this on Netflix and I actually managed to finish it after trying three times . I couldn't determine if it was a comedy because it seemed like it was going to be, or a horror movie because that appeared to be where it was shifting . In the end it was just completely pointless, poorly written and a waste of some good cast members. Do not bother. It's pointless and not in the good way. I think those positive reviews are lies.

Worth a watch, should have a higher rating
Mirm8322 November 2017
I was not expecting much at all from this movie, but was pleasantly surprised. This movie did not make me burst out laughing or fall out of my seat in terror, but it kept me thoroughly engaged for the full duration. It may be feel mildly warm, happy, and sometimes anxious.

I was left with the feeling that this movie was exactly as it was meant to be, a throwback to cheesy horror of the nineties, with a lot of heart. If you've never been on a lame ghost hunt with your friends before, you may not get it. But for those of us who remember poking around in attics, researching old houses on microfilm at the library, ouija boards and candles, and just getting plain scared with your friends, then you will understand this movie, even if the characters are a little old for that stuff.

This movie never attempts to fall back on lame jokes to force a laugh, like the Seth Rogan over-used brand of weed and butt one- liners. It could have but didn't, and I was so appreciative of that.

5 stars for not being a movie for which I would have to make fun of my boyfriend for thinking it was a good idea to watch on a date. 1 star for characters who never become disassociated killers, even under stress. 1 star for the laid back and realistic ending.

Ghastly Team
dcarsonhagy4 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
You would think a movie that had this many "names" in it would have been at least tolerable. Think again.

"Ghost Team" tells a tale about a young man, stuck in a dead-end life, who is obsessed with things that go bump in the night. He so longs to lead his own paranormal research team he would do just about anything to achieve his real dream. Enter some old man babbling about a "haunted barn," and the chase is on.

Not even John Heder, Justin Long, or Amy Sedaris can save this lame- ass excuse for a movie. The script was horrible, although up to a point the movie does manage to create an atmosphere of "something's out there". However, it could not decide what it wanted to be. The "twist," although very plausible, could not keep it interesting or entertaining. The talents of Amy Sedaris are wasted.

I viewed this On-Demand, which advertised the movie as rated "R". I checked it out, and it is really only PG-13, and that's a TAME PG- 13. There is really only one off-color word, no violence, no sex, and, well...really not much of anything.

A wasted attempt that could have been a real hoot had the script been about 20 times better than it was.

I loved this movie!
draikinator6 December 2016
So, I saw this movie on Netflix today, and while I was checking an actor on IMDb I noticed the low rating, which had me worried... but by the end of the film I was utterly dumbfounded BY that low rating. This movie was so enjoyable! At no point did I think to myself "Oh, I didn't like that."

This was not a comedy that got a lot of big laughs from me- but I was always smiling. It wasn't a big show of making me laugh, it just made me enjoy it. I loved the casual jokes from Stan, I loved the way everything tied together so well, I loved the weird and quirky ensemble and I loved how LONG the set up was and how I really got to get involved with every character by the time the danger set in. And on that note, I noticed something I hadn't in a long time- genuine concern for a characters safety! In an odd, roundabout way, it did something so many horror movies have spectacularly failed to do. Because the characters made me laugh, made me happy, I had an emotional connection to them, and I was WORRIED they might die! When I watch a horror movie, I'm generally so uninvested in the characters I forget which ones HAVE already died.

This movie had good, smart humour with likable characters and a fun and interesting premise. I liked every second of it, it never felt too much or too little. It was a damn good movie and I would 100% see a sequel.

Failed comedy
dinalt1017 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure what the budget was for this film, but I've seen better student productions.

The film had the kind of idea that could have been comedy gold. But poor script and direction left it severely lacking.

A shame, as the cast are capable of so much more.

Ghost Team, I'm ghosting you
Kamurai2523 June 2020
Boring watch, wouldn't watch again, and can't recommend unless you're just really into paranormal investigation.

This is honestly a great cast, and I'm not even going to say that they didn't perform adequately, but the characters written (whether or not by design) felt really lame, just people floundering in the scene. And maybe that supposed to be some kind of commentary on the types of people that go ghost hunting, but it just didn't work for me.

It is really hard to talk about the "twist", even mentioning there is a "twist", even with quotes supposedly ruins it. I did not enjoy the angle they approached, even "Safety Not Guaranteed", when they left it open ended, used the momentum of the "is it, is it not" conundrum to let you visualize how you thought it ended, but this feels like it just switched movies on us.

I think the last act is intended to bolster people with low self esteem, and tell them that they can do anything, but it's like saying you can do anything, as long as its the first 10 things on this list I have.

I will say that it is my least favorite Justin Long character, and as a big fan, that should be saying something. Don't get me wrong, he nailed it, but he was just perfectly an awful character.

It was ok
mochteam24 November 2022
Some movies you don't expect much from other than to be entertained. This movie had real actors that helped because the plot and script were lame. There not much to say about the film other than the script was bad. It aims at being a comedy but is quirky instead of funny.

The things I laughed at weren't the jokes they wanted you to laugh at. It felt like watching a sit con with no laugh track that badly needed one so you know when they're trying to be funny. Movies like this need actual comedians helping them write it so that it ends up being funny instead of a dud.

I guess they want you to write a novel for a review but if I do I'd had put more effort into this review than. They did the script.

this is top shelf parody
jason-596507 February 2021
Clearly this movie was made with a deep love for the genre. Its really good parody and found it really fun. Everything annoying about the acting and the writing are perfectly tuned to reinforce the comedic effect. I think most fans of ghost horror films will find this and a half liter of vodka to be more than enough fun for a Saturday night.

Quirky, Sweet, and Bundles of Fun
elowynofavalon-211 September 2021
I think people tend to rate indie films lower on principle, which is entirely unfair, particularly in this case. This movie had a lot of heart and pathos along with an abundance of charm and goofiness. A scene with the incomparable Amy Sedaris using her psychic abilities in a tense situation had me rolling. Another element worth mentioning is the score by Joe Hastings, which brought a fun flavor to the film.

The cast had wonderful chemistry, which isn't always a given even when favorite comedians gather. I found myself rooting for them, enjoying their kooky behavior and passion for their geeky endeavors, and wishing there could be a sequel.

Seriously people, lighten up
lauracolten14 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was really entertaining! It pretty much mocks all the ghost hunting shows that have ever been on TV, past and present. Louis, played by Jon Heder, was hoping to join the cast of a "real" ghost hunting show called Ghost Getters, which was looking for a fan to fill an open spot in the cast. To land a part on the show, fans were asked to send in their best footage of something paranormal as an audition tape (by the way, the entire cast of the fake Ghost Getters show looks exactly like the original Ghost Hunters cast on SyFy). So Louis, a huge fan of everything Ghost Getters, assembles a team to go to a haunted barn to try to get footage for the show. It was all very silly, but the veteran actors in the cast made it fun to watch.

Why the Bad Reviews??
rsforss28 June 2020
This movie was hilarious, surprisingly heart-warming, and actually a decent thriller. It never gets boring, and the cast grows more likable throughout the film. I don't understand how this has gotten so many poor reviews, when it's definitely one of the top "ghost hunter" movies out there.

Anyways, don't believe the bad type. This is legit a movie worth the time. The only part I would complain about ould be the sound editing, as the words can be hard to make out at times. I'd recommend subtitles, not because it's impossible to follow along without them, but because it makes sure you don't miss anything.

Definitely check it out!

Your father wants you to know he loves you
nogodnomasters10 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Lewis (Jon Heder/Napoleon Dynamite) owns a copy shop and wants to hunt ghosts. His best friend Stan (David Krumholtz) believes his girlfriend Pam was abducted by aliens because she left him at the altar...why else would she not show? They get wind that on old barn may be haunted and they decide to go investigate. Lewis recruits his nephew Zak (Paul W. Downs) a techno-weenie who arranges a five-finger borrowing of equipment. The get caught by mall cop Ross (Justin Long) who they convince to join them. Ellie (Melonie Diaz) invites herself along and Victoria the psychic (Amy Sedaris) is invited....and she knew she was going to be invited.

The film had a few good laughs, but was mostly smile funny. It is a refreshing alternative to the multitude of hand held ghost hunter films out there. The twist I had suspected when the old man came into the copy shop which may say too much about myself.

Was that a Geiger counter Ellie was using to chase ghosts? Guide: F-word. no sex or nudity. Worst "Dream Weaver" sing-along/karaoke in a movie to date. Comedy not horror.

Scooby Dooby Doo. Enjoyable Funny Movie. Great Actors
carlscammell8 December 2020
Dont believe the other bad reviews! Theyre being intellectual snobs... The movie was enjoyable funny organic and original unlike most Hollywood tripe being produced..It had an old school 90s 00s humour, a bit scooby doo a bit HaroldNkumar, The movie stars a smash hit cast Napoleon dynamite himself, Jeepers Creepers Justin Long, and freaks n geeks Neils Brother.. The characters throughout had 3 dimensions and were all well defined. It isn't so much a horror movie as it is a chilled out comedy, which I found myself chuckling to in parts. The was a very enjoyable twist in the final chapter's of the film, satisfying a very awkward itch as most ghost stories are predictable overused and let's face it boring. I would definetly recommend this movie if you were looking for something different without all the bells and whistles of Hollywood. 8/10
