60 hours to create something memorable
emailsupportstaff9 October 2015
Okay, so as the director I'm clearly biased but this is the only way to tell our story.

My name is Chris Neumann and I put together an amazing team to create a film for the Colchester Film Festival's 60 hour film challenge. I've participated in a smaller capacity in other film challenges and contests in the past but this was my first attempt at directing and leading a team from start to finish. The challenge was to write, film, edit, and upload a final copy of a 5 minute long film in only 60 hours.

For those unfamiliar with the challenge format, we were given the following required criteria to write our film: Title: The River Line: "I recognised their face from a picture I'd seen online" Action: Two glasses are filled with exactly the same amount of liquid

We are located in Asheville North Carolina, USA and we experienced record breaking rainfall throughout the 60 hours as well as the threat of hurricane Joaquin.

Here are a few of the challenges we experienced:

On day one, we had 7 actors call to cancel within an hour of starting the challenge. Our screen writer and her husband were stranded at their house due to the severe weather so we were only able to communicate via phone.

On day two, 15 minutes after arriving on set, we had an hour and a half long power outage. By noon, we realized that our lead actor was not going to arrive and we had to rewrite the script. We wrapped filming at 5 PM and started voice over work at 7PM we had to stop at 9 due to another power outage that continued until 12 PM.

On day three, At 12:01 AM (yes, it was only on for a minute) the power went back off and was estimated to be off until noon the following day. I took apart my desktop computer with a headlamp, drove 15 minutes to my parents house, took apart my father's computer, connected mine, and put together a rough edit until 6 AM. At 6 AM, I left my parents' house only to find a tree had fallen across the road.

Once I got back home and reconnected my computer, things began to start flowing smoother.

Despite all of the figurative and literal roadblocks, personality conflicts, the constant fear of power outages and technical difficulties, we persevered and created a film, not the one that we intended to but one that we are proud of.

I can only speak for myself but I had a great time during the challenge, made something I'm proud of, met a lot of amazing people who just happen to be amazingly talented, and learned a lot!

I hope you enjoy our film and a big thank you to everyone involved and the organizers of the film challenge!

Chris Neumann
