Walter Matthau: Diamond in the Rough (1997)

*** (out of 4)

Entertaining look at the career of Walter Matthau. This 51 minute documentary isn't ground-breaking and it doesn't go into any great detail but it's a good overview of the legendary actor's career. Neil Simon, Ossie Davis, Jack Lemmon, director Herbert Ross. Charles Matthau and Julie Harris are on hand offering up stories on the actor but the best part is that Matthau himself is here to give a first-hand account.

There's no question that getting to hear from the likes of Lemmon and Ross is great but the highlight is without question hearing Matthau talk about how and why he got into the business and his thoughts on Hollywood as he went from a character actor to a leading man. We get to see clips from some of his better known movies like THE ODD COUPLE and CACTUS FLOWER and hear various stories about them. If you a fan of Matthau then you'll enjoy this.
